Rhetorical Appeal:
Logos: The cartoon shows the Chinese immigrant waiting to be let into America. With him,
he brings bags and crates labeled, Industry, Order, Peace, and Sobriety. These are all
positive qualities, especially in the eyes of capitalists in America. By refusing to let these
positive ideals enter, the illustrator challenges the audience’s logic in this action. Logic tells
the audience that we should let Chinese immigrants enter, thus effectively communicating
the cartoon’s message.
Thesis Statement:
In The Only One Barred Out, the illustrator associates Chinese immigrants with ideals that
strengthen the American workforce, ultimately providing the new perspective of utilizing
immigrants rather than viewing them as the destruction of American values.
