Science 10
Second Quarter - Week 3-4

Name of Learner: _______________________________________________ Date:___________

Section: ________________

MELC No: 7
MELC: Cite examples of practical applications of the different regions of EM waves,
such as the use of radio waves in telecommunications. (S10FE-IIc-d-48)

Title of Activity 1: Who am I?

Directions/Instructions: Name the scientist who contributed in the development of

the electromagnetic wave theory. You may choose your answer from the box below.

Activity Proper:

James Clerk Maxwell Hans Christian Oersted Heinrich Hertz

Michael Faraday Andre-Marie Ampere

1. I am a French physicist who is the first to demonstrate that a magnetic field is

generated when two parallel wires are charged with electricity. I am credited as the
first scientist to discover electromagnetism. Who am I?___________________________

2. I am a British Physicist who demonstrated that a changing magnetic field induces

an electric field. I formulated the principle behind electromagnetic induction. Who
am I?____________________________________________________________

3. I am a German Physicist who conclusively predicted the existence of

electromagnetic waves and its connection to light. I am credited as the scientist who
discovered radio waves. Who am I?___________________________________________

4. I am an English Physicist who noticed that electric fields and magnetic fields can
couple together to form electromagnetic waves, which enable me to develop the
electromagnetic wave theory. Who am I?__________________________________________

5. I a a Danish Physicist who observed that electric current in a wire can deflect a
magnetized compass needle, which lead me to discover the relationship between
electricity and magnetism. Who am I?__________________________________________

Title of Activity 2: Now You Send! Now You Don’t!

Directions/ Instructions: In this activity you will identify the materials that block or
allow the passage of radio waves. You may ask two of your family members to perform
the task with you. Prepare the necessary materials then read and demonstrate the
procedure carefully and answer all the questions that follows.

Activity Proper:

Materials:
Aluminum foil Plastic wrapper Paper
Cellular phone Rubber Gloves

Procedure:
1.Ask one of your family member to hold the cellphone that will serve as receiver.
2.Another family member holds the cellphone that will serve as sender.
3.The sender must be at least 10 meters away from the receiver.
4.The sender will wrap the cellular phone with the aluminum foil you want to test,
using several layers so that they are completely and securely covered.
5. Attempt to send picture using Bluetooth. Does it work?
6.Repeat steps 1 and 2 using other materials. Make sure that your cellular phones
have signals.
7. Fill in the data table.

MATERIAL DOES IT WORK OBSERVATIONS

(Yes or No)
Aluminum
Foil

Plastic

Paper

Rubber
Glove

Guide Questions:

Q1.Which of the given materials allows you to send picture using Bluetooth?

Q2. Compare the reception of messages using different materials.

Q3. What does this tell you about the transmission of the signal?

Q4. What characteristic of EM waves did you discover?

Q5. What common problems could arise during transmission and reception of radio
waves? Explain the possible cause/s of those problems?

Title of Activity 3 : Radio Broadcasting and Communication

Directions/Instructions: The Table below shows the different equipment use in

radio broadcasting. Match the equipment in Column A with its proper function in
column B.

Activity Proper:

Answer A B

1. modulator a. converts sound wave to audio-frequency signal

b. magnify/increases energy of modulated carrier

2. microphone wave

3. amplifier c. produces radio frequency carrier wave

d. transforms AF signal and RF carrier wave to a

4. radio frequency modulated carrier wave.

Oscillator modulated carrier wave

5. speaker e. transmits and receives radio wave

6. demodulator f. converts AF signal to sound energy

7. antenna g. selects the frequency of a station desired

8. tuner h. extracts AF signal from modulated carrier wave
