3. Identify similarities and differences of Traditional African Music to our Music today.
This article provides a review of Western and African music. The study made a comparison of Western and
African music against a biased background towards Western music especially during the nineteenth century
when music was interpreted from a Euro-centric perspective. It is important to investigate Af-rica's
contributions to the music industry. Different interpretations were informed by lack of literature on African
music prior to colonization because African music was not recorded in written form. It was en-tirely based on
oral tradition. Failure by early European ethnomusicologists to appreciate traditional Afri-can music further
isolated African music. Areas of differences are seen in the way Africans treat their rhythm. African rhythms
are complicated as compared to Western rhythm. Data for the study were col-lected using review of related
literature on both Western and African music. Major recommendations from this study are as follows, a cross
cultural paradigm is needed to enable researchers related stake holders to understand the significance of both
Western and African music.
Assignment
African Traditions are expressed through music, art, dance and sculpture.African Tradition is expressed through
many different art forms, such as music, dance, art, sculpture and bead work. These traditions are deeply
ingrained into the whole African culture.Historically, Africa has contributed hugely to music-making in many
other areas of the world most notably the Americas and most significantly in genres such as jazz, rock and roll,
blues, salsa and samba.Among the qualities of African music which may be considered characteristic, then, we
may include the following: an emphasis on rhythmic and metric complexity expressed throughout the musical
system; the use of extended syncopation, or off- beat phrasing of melodic accents, as a melodic device.African
has been and will continue to influence many other types of music. Varying from rock and roll, jazz, the blues,
and even modern pop, African music has traces in all kinds of music. In fact, there are not many genres that do
not have even just a little bit of African ancestry.
