Biography:
Maria Teresa Perales Fernandez was born in Zaragoza on 29 December 1975. At 19 years,
Perales lost mobility from the waist to the feet because of neuropathy, In May 1995, after some
very hard months, she assimilated that she had lost the ability to walk and she adapted to the
new situation. Teresa learned to swim and within a year began competing.
Her paraplegia has not prevented her developing a brilliant career. She rose to prominence in
1998 when the World Championships in New Zealand took the bronze in the 50 freestyle. The
following year she accumulated metals in the European Championships: bronze medal in 50
and 100 free, and 50 butterfly; and silver medal in 200 free, 4x50 and 4x50 free styles.
Teresa was also elected deputy of the Aragonese Party (PAR) for Zaragoza in the Cortes of
Aragon after the elections of 2003. In 2006 assumed the Directorate General of Care Unit.
Perales married the journalist Mariano Menor, on January 8, 2005 in the Basilica del Pilar in her
hometown. In 2010, she became a mother, after gave birth to her son Mariano.

Teresa is considered an elite athlete since she has been repeatedly classified to participate in
the Olympic Games. Some of accomplishments more important have been:
In Sydney 2000, she won four bronze medals -100 and 200 freestyle, 50 backstroke and 50
libres and silver in 50m butterfly.
In Athens 2004, she produced her most outstanding performance until then, winning a gold
medal in the 100 meter freestyle. The next day she won her second medal, bronze, after she
been third in the 50-meter backstroke. On September 22, she won the gold in the 50 meter
butterfly. Two days later, she won the bronze medal in the final of the 100 meters breaststroke.
On September 27, she won two more medals: one silver and one bronze.
In Beijing 2008, she won three gold medals, one silver and one bronze, plus two world records.
In London 2012, she was the standard bearer of the Spanish delegation at the opening
ceremony of the Paralympics Games in London.
Recently in Rio 2016 Finally the Spanish Teresa Perales, Rio conquered in 2016 two silver
medals and one gold, after winning the 50 meters backstroke.
Teresa has also won three world championships and is the older of several world records in
swimming.
