Five Local Entrepreneurs

1. Joe Magsaysay – Potato Corner


Magsaysay started by working at a fast-food chain, which in a few years, he became a
manager, handling five stores. With his skills in store management, he was asked to handle
Potato Corner, of which he was a co-founder. The small food cart business that started back in
1992 now has more than 550 stalls all around the world.

2. Socorro Ramos – National Book Store


Socorro Ramos at the age of 19, with a capital of P200, opened National Book Store in
Escolta with her husband, selling books and school supplies to students. After the post-war boom
proved profitable for the company, ushering in bigger revenues, the Ramoses opened a nine-
story building along Avenida. And now at age 95, she still believes in the time-honored tradition
of “hands-on approach” in business.

3. Asiang Reyes – The Aristocrat


In the 1930s, Asiang Reyes started The Aristocrat as a mobile canteen in Luneta, serving
sandwiches filled with adobo and other Filipino viands. Hotdog trucks were in vogue at that
time. Reyes created her own version of merienda for park-goers. The canteen prospered, and
Reyes and her husband decided to turn it into a full-time restaurant.

4. Aya Fernandez – Project Lily PH


From her science school project, Aya continued her vision to create an eco-friendly social
enterprise. Project Lily PH produces eco-uling which is made from water hyacinth, agri-forest
wastes and coconut husks. She supports and provides local livelihood among Persons With
Disabilities (PWDs) by hiring them as employees to her business.

5. Rissa Mananquil Trillo – Happy Skin


In 2013 Rissa Mananquil Trillo co-founded popular cosmetics brand Happy Skin, known
for innovative makeup that focuses on caring for users’ skin. Happy Skin has 13 stores and
almost 100 beauty counters in the Philippines, and has won 30 beauty awards, including Most
Promising New Cosmetic Brand from Watsons Philippines.
Five Foreign Entrepreneurs
1. Enrique Gomez-Junco – Optima Energia.
Enrique Gomez-Junco is a Mexican entrepreneur focused on energy efficiency and is the
founder and CEO of Optima Energia, which has helped many throughout Mexico to reduce their
energy consumption and help minimize their environmental footprint.

2. Bill Gates – Microsoft


Bill Gates is the founder of the PC software firm Microsoft corporation. He is widely
credited as one of the pioneers who revolutionized the personal computing industry with
Microsoft’s operating system ‘Windows’. Started in 1975, Microsoft now has diversified
interests in various companies including Skype, LinkedIn, Yammer, Microsoft Mobile (Earlier
known as Nokia).

3. Jeff Bezos – Amazon


Born in 1964, Jeff Bezos is the founder & CEO of the e-commerce giant Amazon. He
founded Amazon as an online bookstore in the year 1994. Today, Amazon is not only world’s
largest online shopping platform but also has diversified interests in many other businesses like
Amazon Web Services, Alexa, Junglee, Audible etc.

4. Oprah Winfrey – Harpo Studios


Oprah, a TV personality turned entrepreneur, landed her first TV show in 1983, where
she steadily grew her brand and her empire, founding Harpo Studios, a multimedia company, in
1988. The company, through ad revenue and other revenue streams, has steadily grown to over
12,500 employees. Winfrey co-founded Oxygen Media, another media company that attracts
millions of annual television viewers.

5. Larry Page – Google


Larry Page is the co-founder of Google, the world's number one search engine. Google
was started by Page and his partner Sergey Brin while they were doctorate students at Stanford
University. With an initial investment of just $100,000, the two partners quickly grew Google
into a multinational conglomerate. In 2015, Google was restructured to form the parent company
Alphabet Inc., with Page serving as CEO.
