Properties of good sanitary xtures:

1. Durable (long lasting)

2. Impervious to water (it must not absorb water)

3. Resistant to corrosion (in order to make it long lasting and to be

hygienic)

4. Simple in outline (so that there will be no crannies to hold dirt)

5. Smooth surface inside out (for ease of cleaning and to be largely self
cleansing internally as ushed in use)

6. With the inside so designed that the water will drain naturally to the
outlet.

01 wash basin
• A wash basin is used for washing hands, face etc.

• It is usually made of re clay, stoneware, earthenware or vitreous china.

Nowadays they are also made of steel, plastic, glass, aluminium etc.

• An ordinary washbasin is mounted on brackets xed on wall. While a

pedestal type basin are mounted on pedestal rising from wall.

There are two types of wash basins - the at back and the angle back.

• Human movements during the use of washbasin have to be taken into account when designing the layout of a
toilet

• Wash basin must be at appropriate height so that one needn’t bend or stretch while using the same. A head space
of about 50 cm is also necessary.

05 sinks
• A sink is a rectangular basin used in kitchen or laboratory for cleaning utensils, and
glasswares.

• It is made up of glazed earthware, stoneware, stainless steel etc.

• It is provided with draining board on the right of user.

• The mouth of the outlet pipe is provided with grating so that the entry of coarse solid
substances is prevented.
