but continued living in Bandung since the
very early year of middle school. I am 19
years old as of 2021 and the moment I make
this document.
PREFACE
Praises to Allah up above for giving me a blessing and letting me finish my 3 rd semester
midterm assignment entitled “Analysis and Aesthetic Interpretation on Red Velvet The Velvet –
The 2nd Mini Album” on time without any heavy disruption.
First and foremost, my name is Cindy Farrah Ditta and I’m the writer of this document.
This paper is made for college assignment purposes as written before, this is about analysing the
aesthetic of an object that I know. I looked for the object to be analysed and I simply describe the
aesthetic elements of the object in detail. From what it is called, aesthetical description, design
consideration, and more to add.
I managed to finish this to the extent of what I expect this to be. I also want to say thank
you to the lecturer, Mr. Robi Rusdiana for teaching the materials and some of my classmates for
distributing a help even just a little. Hopefully, this paper meets the standard of what the
assignment supposed to be.

A. DEFINITION OF AESTHETIC AND AESTHETIC STRUCTURE
1. Definition of Aesthetic
According to the Greek word for perception (aesthesis) and first used in the 18 th
century by the German philosopher Alexander Baumgarten, the term “aesthetic”
refers to those principles about the nature and appreciation of beauty especially in the
visual art. The term ‘aesthetic’ has come to be used as or to designate among other
things such as a kind of object, a kind of judgment, a kind of attitude, a kind of
experience, and lastly a kind of value.
To make it simple, aesthetic can be defined as the knowledge of beauty, the
knowledge that is trying or putting an effort to learn, discuss, and understand the
beauty of something.
2. Aesthetic Structure
Understanding aesthetic is the same way as understanding what makes aesthetic is
aesthetic and those are called as the aesthetic structure. The structure of aesthetic
includes:
1) Line
There are two types of line, formal and non-formal. The both of them can fuse or
be combined and give out the aesthetic impression.
2) Shape
The element of a shape is usually used as a representation of the artist’s
expression in a work of art or to symbolize the artist’s feelings.
3) Texture
Texture is made purposely to show the feeling of a surface’s substance intended
to give out certain feelings of a work of art.
4) Colors
Colors have a really important or even crucial part in the universe of visual arts.
According to Dharsono, the important role that colors have are: color as a color,
color that can represent the nature, and color to symbolize something (e.g red to
represent bravery).
B. STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION ON RED VELVET: THE

1. Description of Cover of an Album Titled THE VELVET [The 2nd Mini Album]
1) The reason behind why I chose this album to be analysed is because when the album
was first released, it got a lot of attention as it left a big impression not only to their
fans but also non-fans.
2) The title track of this album is ‘One of These Nights’ and there is a MV to that track.
The cover of this album also support or is related to the MV of the title track
containing a story of a ship tragedy happened in South Korea. This album is basically
a tribute to the Sewol ship incident and went viral on Korea.
3) The album cover has the structure of aesthetic that can be written on this assignment.
4) The cover has theory (refer to number 1 and 2).
5) I took the image of the album cover from website dedicated to Red Velvet,

6) This album was released in March 17, 2016.
7) This album looked like a very simple shot of people in hoodie just holding a candle
but it actually has meaning.
2. Structural Analysis Aesthetic of Red Velvet - The Velvet (The 2 nd Mini Album)

Line There is no line in this album cover since this is
a photography of humans and objects.
Colour The colors in this album cover seems pretty

warm and it complement the whole cover well.
Shape There’s no certain shape but the hoodie can be

the slightest shape to represent the
commemoration.
Texture There is a grainy texture on this album and
slight blur on one of the members’ face. The
reason of the blur was because at the time of this
album was released, the member who was
blurred was the same age with the victims of the
incident. (Number 2)
Time and Space Time is when the ship wreck incident already
happened. As seen on the album cover, they all
are in one room commemorating the incident.
Harmony The colour gradation on the background gives
out a somehow warm tone, vintage-ish, and they
complement each other pretty well.
Contrast The contrast can be seen on how the overall
cover looked pretty warm while there is one
member’s hair being red. The red hair is a
symbol of the dead victims of the ship wreck
incident.
Rhythm The hood, the candles, and the red hair formed
as one: to commemorate the incident.
Unity The unity is in the warm color tone in the

background with the candles. Candles are lit
with fire and are usually warm, they create unity
with each other.
Simplicity Warm background color with some objects that
can be seen on the cover (candles, hoodies) are
good to look at and it may make people wonder
or even know what is the meaning.
3. Interpretation Aesthetic of Red Velvet - The Velvet (The 2nd Mini Album) Album
Cover
From my point of view, this album cover does look very simple and it matches the
interest of my eyes and my aesthetic view, from the warm color tone and overall
aesthetic. Not only the warm color that is attractive, it makes some people question some
of the objects there too. From the blurred face, why are the objects hoodies, and candles.
To me, the album cover is an art that has the structures of aesthetic. It has meanings, not
only one but a lot, I can say.
This album cover alone can tell one whole story of the Sewol Ship Wreck Incident that
lead most of the students (victims) on board unfortunately drowning that happened in 16
April 2014. From the warm tone that matches the lit candles to the people wearing
hoodies to commemorate the incident.
C. CONLUSION
This album is a work of an art and has aesthetic values. There are aesthetic elements in it;
colors that complement each other, the usage of texture, contrast, and more to tell people
of a story. If people is interested enough to dig more deep into the meanings of the album
cover, they may see how incredible the album cover is done.
This album cover is pretty impressive with emotions and touching as it is a tribute to the
Sewol incident. People can always remember the kind souls who don’t get to live long
from having to experience such tragedy that ended their life.
