Strategic Planning Research Toward A Theory Driven Agenda
1. Introduction
This paper is written by Carola Wolf of Aston University and Steven W. Floyd of
University of Massachusetts–Amherst and was published in the Journal of
Management
Wolf and Floyd in this research attempted to provide answer to the questions:
2. Discussion
The review has divided the researches based on their chronological order as; the
first part cover the era between 1980 and 1993 and the other part covers the new
Era in Strategic Planning Research.

In the first era, “most of the published literature on planning is either prescriptive
(i.e., what ought to be the characteristics of a long range planning process) or
descriptive (i.e., what is the status of long range planning as it is practiced in
organizations today)”. For this specific topic under this chronological time about 65
literature where included for the study. The subsequent authors have focused on
the more proximate outcomes of strategic planning as potential influences on distal
outcomes.
Strategic planning research between 1980 and the early 1990s seems dominated by
the evaluation of the effects of strategic planning on distal organizational outcomes,
mostly measures of organizational performance, and questions of how to design
strategic planning systems given specific environmental and/or organizational
contingencies.
The study shows three key trends in recent research on the role of actors in
strategic planning.
First, since the 1990s, the field has moved away from the simplistic view of
strategic thinking being the purview of top management with implementation
left as the responsibility of the rest of the organization. Instead, scholars
take into account a diversity of actors in strategic planning.
Second, as part of a general decentralization of strategic responsibilities,
research has identified a role shift and new responsibilities for middle- and
lower-level actors.
Third, research has moved away from questions like “how do organizational
members impede planning?” to such questions as “how do organizational
members contribute to planning, and how can they be integrated?”

The literature stated the gap between researches done on the topic
stated in the chronologically ordered; that means the first group which
include the studies done from 1980 to 1993 depends on the outcome
of strategic planning as a distal outcome whereas the later part or new
era which states immediate effects as well.
The scope of the study was too vast and this makes difficult for the view to
understand due to large ideas written.
The presented review under the above topic has no table or contents. Ideas
were not sorted according to their relevance or importance.
