The presenter is considering pursuing mechanical engineering and plans to attend the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) due to its hands-on learning approach and high employment rates post-graduation. Some key costs outlined are tuition, textbooks, commitment fees, and transportation passes.

The presenter is considering the Mechanical Engineering program because they enjoy designing and making things that can benefit people. BCIT's focus on hands-on learning and co-op programs also appeals to the presenter.

The presenter plans to attend BCIT because it offers smaller class sizes and opportunities for hands-on learning and job experience. BCIT's main campus location in Burnaby is also convenient for the presenter to commute to from home using public transportation.

Post-Secondary Decision
I am potentially considering pursuing mechanical engineering or something
similar as I’m very interested in the idea of designing projects and seeing them come to
life. I like making things and designing stuff.

The post-secondary institution I am planning to attend after high school is the

British Columbia Institute of Technology.
British Columbia Institute of Technology
The school I’m looking into right now is BCIT as it is a great institute that is well known for providing
students with a lot of knowledge and incorporating hands-on work along with co-op programs/work experience
which can help and benefit students when looking for a job after graduation.

BCIT seems like it is a better fit for me compared to other universities and institutes as it focuses more on
hands-on work and actual on-the-job experience, which to me seems the most important. I have also heard that
BCIT is a very good school when transitioning to an actual job as 98% of people that have graduated with a
degree are employed.
Additional Reasons Why BCIT
BCIT has smaller class sizes, which allow you to have more attention from your teacher and makes it
easier to meet new people.

BCIT’s main campus is located in Burnaby, BC, but it also has five other campuses located in the Metro
Vancouver region. These campuses are not too far so I wouldn’t need to get a dorm nearby as I can just use
public transportation, and it is $6,070.48/year for the mechanical engineering course I am considering doing. If I
were to get a dorm the prices for one are around $4,800.

These main reasons included along with all the other small ones are the reasons I think the British
Columbia Institute of Technology will be the best fit for me.
Mechanical Engineering
The program I have selected is Mechanical Engineering which is an engineering branch that combines
mathematics and physics in order to design, manufacture, maintain, test, and analyze devices, machinery, tools,
engines, etc.
This program is a good fit for me as I like making and designing things that can benefit us. I enjoy the
whole process of spending time and failing along the way to finally achieve the outcome I’d like. I also would
like to work on things and machinery that can benefit people and work towards being more sustainable. It is
also a well paying job, mechanical engineers in BC make a average salary of $76,467.
Program Requirements
Program Requirements for this course The requirements for this course include:
include: -English 12
-Pre-calculus 12
Mechanical Engineering Technology -Physics 11 and Chemistry 11.
(Mechanical Design Option), which is a
2-year course. Additional requirements are:
-Minimum grade of 67% in Grade 12 English and
Chemistry 11
-Minimum grade of 73% in Pre-calculus 12 and
Physics 11
Term 1 Courses (September-December)

All first-year Mechanical Engineers share common courses

for the first year of schooling, these courses include:

- Engineering Materials 1 (CHSC 1105)

- Technical Communication 1 for Mechanical
Engineering (COMM 1169)
- Basic Technical Mathematics for Mechanical
(MATH 1491)
- Engineering Graphics 1 (MECH 1102)
- Energy Systems (MECH 1120)
- Statics (MECH 1141)
- Computer Applications and Programming (MECH
1171)
Term 2 Courses (January-May)
Courses include:

- Engineering Materials 2 (CHSC 2205)

- Calculus for Mechanical (MATH 2491)
- Manufacturing Processes (MECH 1210)
- Engineering Graphics 2 (MECH 2202)
- Strength of Materials (MECH 2240)
- Dynamics (MECH 2241)
- Physics for Mechanical (PHYS 2149)

These courses are required as they will build the

foundation for engineering in topics like math,
science, communications, computing, etc.
Expenses/Costs
There will be many costs for my first year at BCIT, these costs are:
- Tuition which is around $6,070.48
- Textbook costs which is around $960 in total
- Commitment fee - $500
- U-Pass (Student Transit Program) - is around $530.

Other expenses are either included in the tuition or I have already covered like school supplies, laptop,
etc. I won't have to worry about spending money on a dorm as I will be living at home and commuting to school
everyday.
Covering Payments
I will be covering these payments with the help of my parents as they have a registered education
savings plan that has been collecting money for many years to help cover tuition and school expenses. I
will also get a job and try to cover as much as I can. I’ll try my best to also get a scholarship and/or other
things like Entrance Awards, so I can save money and cut school expenses.
