1.3 The completed flow net for the dam shown below includes a steel sheet-pile cutoff wall
located at the head-water side of the dam in order to reduce the seepage loss. The dam is half
a kilometer in width (shore to shore) and the permeability of the silty sand stratum is 3.5 x
10-4 cm/s. Find,
(a) The total seepage loss under the dam in liters per year, and
(b) Would the dam be more stable if the cutoff wall was placed under its tail-water side?

2.1 Give two possible reasons that may cause a Proctor test result plot to cross the Zero Air
Void line?
2.2 The following results are obtained from a standard compaction test.
Mass of compacted soil (g) 1920.5 2051.5 2138.5 2147.0 2120.0 2081.5
Moisture content (%) 11.0 12.1 12.8 13.6 14.6 16.3
The specific gravity of the solids is 2.68, and the volume of the compaction mould is 1000 cm 3.
Plot the compaction curve and obtain the maximum dry density and optimum moisture
content. Plot also the 0%, 5% and 10% air void curves. At the maximum dry density, calculate
the void ratio, degree of saturation and air content. If the natural moisture content in the field
is 11.8%, what will be the possible maximum dry density if the soil is compacted with its
natural moisture content?

Question 3: On Stress in Soils [30%]
6.1 Draw the total, neutral and effective stress profiles for the layered system shown below.
6.2 The figure below shows a plan view of a rectangular footing with a 2m x 2m square hole
(through its entire thickness). The hole is located at 1 m from the left edge and is equally
positioned between zhe top and lower footing. If the uniform contact pressure under the footing
is 200 kPa, use Fadum’s equation (or chart) to compute the vertical stress component at a
point 2 m below the center of the square hole.
