2.2 Setting range for the WIC1-HB4

Four different wide-range current transformers are

available for the protection system WIC1-HB4. De-
pending upon the nominal power and the nominal cur-
rent of the system the following transformers/converters
are available.

Tabelle 2.1: Setting ranges

Via parameter IS the protection relay can be adjusted

to the respective operational current of the
switchboard. For detailed information on how to calcu-
late the resulting protection setting values, please refer
to chapter 3.9 “Application Description”.

2.3 Operating Interface

The adjustment of protective functions can be done via

DIP switches; there are 4 DIP switches for binary co-
ded setting of one protective parameter.

For the relay version WIC1-HB42 setting of parame-

ters via interface is not possible any more, but it is
possible to read-out the stored fault values as well as
the setting values of the WIC1.

The interface for this version can be found at the left of

the relay and additionally above the DIP switch block.

3 Technical Data

3.1 Protective functions

3.1.1 Minimum operation current and

primary nominal current

In order to operate reliably, the WIC1-HB4 - as all

self-powered protection relays - needs a minimal cur-
rent flowing constantly in the phase. This minimal cur-
rent is the smallest rated CT current (IS) x 0.9 listed in
table 2.1.

The real rated current of the operating component to

be protected is adjusted by parameter IS. All further
settings at the protection relay refer to the adjusted Is.
This is to be described in the following example:

Boundary condition:
Setting IS = 40 A, CT type W3, 32 A to 112 A
Setting I>: 1.1 x IS = 1.1 x 40 A = 44 A
Setting I>>: 10 x IS = 10 x 40 A = 400 A

former currents (Is) can be adjusted.

8 TD_WIC1-HB4_01.08_GB
The starting point of the characteristic should be in the
area of the rated CT current, e. g. W3 = 32 - 112 A.
If over the parameter I> the starting point is set higher,
then the relay cut the characteristics at 20 x upper
rated current.

Please note:
To avoid additional delay times, the unit type should
be selected as to make sure that the nominal current of
the device is within the upper setting range of Is. The
higher the measured value of WIC1-HB4 is before
tripping, the higher the probability that the WIC1-HB4
is already being supplied with power. This measure al-
lows the tripping time to be fastened.

Example: The nominal current of an outgoing feeder is

250 A. The selection of the unit type can be based on
the following criteria:

All devices have been designed for a continuous ther-

mal rating of I> = 2,5 x Is. Thus the over current factor
can be taken into account for calculation of the nomi-
nal range.

For the unit version WIC1H42W3, the nominal cur-

rent of 250 A is within the upper setting range pro-
vided that the over current factor was also taken into
account.

Table 3.3: Setting ranges

For this application the unit version WIC1-HB42W3 can be selected. Related to the lowest adjustable value, the
difference is by factor 8.7. Consequently, in case of failure, there is a high probability that the minimum current
is flowing and energy supply of the WIC1 is ensured.

3.9.1 Foreword

As CT-powered protection relay the WIC1-HB4 is 2. Furthermore please pay attention to the operating

to the user to choose either 1.15 x IS or 1.2 x IS.

is approx. 3 kA, for example, because of the loca-
tion, then the preference should be given to the

cleanly by the WIC1.

Estimation of the tripping time at inverse characteristics

The setting and estimation by the use of an inverse characteristic will be explained at the following example.

Boundary condition:
Operating current of the load (IS): 72 A
Selected CT ratio: WIC1-W3, 32 – 112 A
Characteristic: Normal Inverse N-INV
Starting point of the characteristic: I> x IS
Overcurrent (I>): 1.4
Factor „a“ (tI>): 0,2
Short current (I>>): 1 kA
Delay time for I>>: 100 ms
Primary test current value: 150 A

Setting of the WIC1:

1. IS = 72 A
2. I> = 1.4
3. „a“ (tI>) = 0.2
4. I>> = 14
5. tI>> = 0.1 s

Calculation of the tripping time from the characteristic curve

Starting point of the curve = IS x I> = 1.4 x 72 A = 100.8 A,

this correspond to = 1 x I/IS x I>.
Primary testing current = 150 A, here for a factor as follows is calculated I/IS × I> = 150 A/100.8 A = 1.488

4 Commissioning and 4.5 Repair work
Maintenance
The WIC1 is a hermetically sealed relay and so it is
not possible to do any repair work at your end.
4.1.1 Important note
Due to the optimized cost structure, however, repair in
our works is also not beneficial. During the warranty

value.
• WIC1-TU: This testing unit allows checking the cor-
rect function of the processor unit in the WIC1.
4.2 Functional test

The complete functional test can only be per-formed as

a primary test.

A simple partial test to check processor functions can

be made by means of the WIC1-TU.

4.3 Referential Potential of the

Protection Device

The earth connection point of the WIC1 as well as all

metal parts and the tripping coil of the device are di-
rectly connected with the primary wire. Thus the pri-
mary conductor is the electric referential potential of
the device. Earthing of the protective device is not
possible.

4.4 Maintenance

The entire protection system WIC1-HB4 is designed

for a maintenance-free period of 25 years hence there
are no specific jobs necessary to be done during the
operating life of the relays. Very often, a periodical
check of the protective adjustments is required by the
end user. Such checks are left to the choice of the
user.
