Title: Differential impact of commercial bank credit to Indian economy and growth.

Motivation:

When I started to think about the topic I wanted to base my fourth semester dissertation upon, I
thought of many things. While the topics that came to mind were varied and diverse business topics,
the one thread that tied them all together was how they all utilized financing as an entry point to
grow not just the business but also the economy. But our banking system, esp. PSBs have been
reeling under tremendous pressure from quite a few years due to the rising NPA count.
When Govt of India announced opening a bad bank to buy the NPA from the PSBs. But this is 2021
not 1981 where we are solely dependent on PSBs for ccredit to stimulate the economy. That is why
when I finally arrived on the topic of my choice, I was delighted as it offered an important and
arguably volatile window into the credit flow and distribution in the economy from PSB, PVB, FB,
NBFCs etc. The topic I want to work on is ‘Differential impact of commercial bank credit to Indian
economy and growth’
Objectives:
1. To identify the credit flow in the economy.
2. Patterns in credit disbursal of domestic and international banks in India
3. Need for a bad bank when there is growth in credit share of pvt banks.
4. Systemic importance of public sector banks
I want to research about this as today, while we are living in times of explosive growth in private
banking and fintech and neo-banks coupled by the 4G internet revolution in the country. This is
worth knowing that all the negative publicity PSBs get, are we really looking at their demise in
progress or they have been treated unfairly and are important in economic growth.
Data Sources: RBI database, EPWRF
Methodology: The study will be computing the proportion of credit to different sectors of the
economy by the different banking institutions based on their type along with the patterns in loan
book of PSB, PVB, FB, NBFC. The study will be based entirely on secondary data. The focus will
be on the entire banking sector for the period 2000-2020.
