Course Objectives

Ø To facilitate the learning of basic legal and ethical issues regarding the
counsellor-client relationship;

Ø To facilitate the learning of ethical regulatory principles for protecting the


public from unethical and incompetent practice of counselling;

Ø To provide skills for ethically appropriate counsellor behaviour in standard


and situation-specific settings;

Ø To motivate students to evaluate their personal value systems in the light of


professional ethics.
Expected Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, it is expected that students would:

v Know the main elements of the professional ethics of counselling


and psychotherapy and their application in Kenya;

v Be competent in analysing standard and non-standard ethical


issues of counselling and responding with appropriate skills;

v Be motivated to practice counselling with due regard for the


highest possible ethical standards through personal and
collegial monitoring techniques.
Course Assessment

There will be two parts to the Assessment:

Formative Assessment (CAT) 40%:


§Two Assignments;
§A comparative reflection paper; and
§one journal article summary.

Summative Assessment (End-Sem.) 60% :
