Internet - Web browsers, Search Engines and Email

Aim: To understand the features of Web browsers, Search Engines, Electronic


mail and to create an email account.
Software: PC with internet connection, web browsers
Theory:

The purpose of a web browser is to fetch content from the Web and
display it on a user's device. A web browser (commonly referred to as a
browser) is application software for accessing the World Wide Web. When a
user requests a web page from a particular website, the web browser retrieves
the necessary content from a web server and then displays the page on the
user's device. A web browser is not the same thing as a search engine, though
the two are often confused. A search engine is a website that provides links
to other websites. However, to connect to a website's server and display its
web pages, a user must have a web browser installed. The first web browser,
called World Wide Web, was created in 1990 by Sir Tim Berners-Lee.

Examples of web browsers include Google Chrome, Internet Explorer,


Microsoft Edge, Apple Safari, Mozilla Firefox, Yandex, Opera etc.

A search engine is a software system that is designed to carry out web


searches. They search the World Wide Web in a systematic way for particular
information specified in a textual web search query.

Examples of search engines - Google, Yahoo, Microsoft Bing etc

Steps to perform a search: - To perform a search, you'll need to navigate


to a search engine in your web browser, type one or more keywords—also
known as search terms—then press Enter on your keyboard. After you run a
search, you'll see a list of relevant websites that match your search terms.
These are commonly known as search results. If you're having trouble
thinking of new search terms, you can use search suggestions instead. These
will usually appear as you're typing, and they're a great way to find new
keywords you might not have tried otherwise. To use a search suggestion, you
can click it with your mouse, or select it with the arrow keys on your keyboard.

There may be times when you're looking for something more specific,
like a news article, picture, or video. Most search engines have links at the
top of the page that allow you to perform these unique searches. We can use
the same search terms to look for images instead of websites.
Specialist search engines: There are a number of specialist search
engines that allow users to search for specific things like videos, used cars,
recipes, flights and hotels. SEO tactics can be used to help your products and
services rank well on specialist search engines. Listings on these websites
often appear in standard web search results.

Examples of specialist search engines: YouTube, Amazon, Skyscanner,


Facebook etc

E-mail - A method of exchanging messages instantly from one system


to another with the help of the internet is called an Email. Ray Tomlinson is
called as the father of the email system, and he sent a communication
between two computer systems for ARPANET. Now we know how the mailbox
looks. The mail can be sent to more than one recipient, and the recipient’s
name can be hidden from others by adding their names in Bcc.

Examples – Google Gmail, Microsoft Outlook, Yahoo Mail, Rediff mail etc
Procedure:

The steps to create Gmail account and to send emails are:

Step 1: Visit Google account creation page, accounts.google.com

Step 2: Click on Create account.

Step 3: The sign-up form will appear. Enter your first and last name.

Step 4: Choose a Username for your account. (Here you can also use an
existing email address)

Step 5: After choosing a username, enter a password. Type the password


again to confirm. (As per Google's instruction always use 8 or more characters
with a mix of letters, numbers & symbols)

Step 6: At last tap on Next. (Right corner of the screen)

Step 7: On the next page enter your phone number to verify your account. (It
is a two step verification process for security)

Step 8: On the given mobile number you will receive a text message from
Google with a verification code. Enter the verification code and tap on Verify.

Step 9: On the next page enter your DOB in the specified fields.

Step 10: Choose a Gender.

Step 11: Tap on Next.


Step 12: Read, Google's Terms of Service and Privacy Policy will appear on the
screen and click on I agree. Then a message will generate that
“Congratulations! your account has been created”.

From now onwards every time you sign in you just have to enter your
email id and password. And every time you sign in don't forget to sign-out
because it prevents others from viewing your emails. Navigate to the circle (in
the top-right corner of the page). Here tap on it, from the below option, select
Sign-out. You can use your username and password to sign in to Gmail and
other Google products like YouTube, Google Play, and Google Drive.

Result: Familiarized the features of Internet - Web browsers, Search Engines


and created an Email account.
