Who is the program for
and what are the requirements?
Interested in UX but still not exactly sure what it actually means to study and
work as a UX designer?
Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered! We’ve molded even the most tenderfooted of UX hopefuls
into confident designers, ready to take the job market by storm. Our diverse student body comes
from all walks of life, bringing a wide variety of skills and experiences that help them build
unique names for themselves in the design world. And you don’t need a particular background or
qualification to succeed in the program either!
If you’ve got the motivation, we’ll give you the means! All you’ll need to bring to the table is
a computer, an internet connection, and a healthy dose of enthusiasm. For information on
which tools you’ll be using on the program, see “Which tools will you use on the program?”.
Page 4
2.
What will you finish the program with?
By the end of the program, you’ll know how and when to use different industry standard tools—
including Adobe XD, Balsamiq, and InVision. You’ll have numerous job skills under your belt
including user research and testing, rapid prototyping, iterative design, interaction design,
responsive design, and even a little bit of visual design as the icing on the cake. To complement
the highly practical aspects of the program, you’ll also explore and apply the theory behind user
psychology, accessibility, usability, and emotional design, which will impress employers and
clients alike.
Based on our comprehensive curriculum, you’ll be qualified for “Junior UX Designer” or “UX
Designer” roles. Most of our graduates find jobs as UX or UX/UI designers, but some find jobs
in other areas—including product design, product management, interaction design, visual
design and web design. If you have transferable skills from your previous career, you can
potentially land a more senior role; your career specialist will help you to craft the right story.
Many job ads for UX designers ask for 2+ years of experience, but it is often part of their
“wishlist” rather than a requirement.
You’ll also finish the course with a certificate of completion and a portfolio with three complete
projects (read more under “Which projects will you be working on?”).

What kind of support is available?
At CareerFoundry, you’re never alone! From the moment you start the program, your student
advisor will be there to answer your questions, helping you get used to our platform and
supporting you as a new CareerFoundry student. You’ll also be assigned a personal mentor
and tutor. These industry experts are located all over the world and will act as your teachers,
cheerleaders, and confidants through every step of your UX design journey.
We encourage students to work with a study buddy throughout the program—we’ll even help you
find one! Working with a peer will make your studies easier, more successful, and more enjoyable
than working alone. Study buddies motivate each other and keep each other accountable,
discuss course topics, help each other understand specific concepts, share knowledge, and give
each other feedback.
Our students also regularly organize in-person meetups around the world, where they network
and share experiences.

How much time do I need to commit
to the program?
Our UX Design Program takes you through three journeys—Intro to UX Design, Immersion, and
your choice of a specialization—for a total of up to nine months of coursework (one month in Intro
to UX Design, six months in Immersion, and two months in your chosen specialization).
The program requires an average of 15 hours per week. Since you’re not required to be online at
specific times to work on the material, you have a great deal of flexibility in which hours you set
aside for study. It’s possible to finish the program in less than nine months—some students put
aside time specifically to complete their program, dedicating an average of 30-40 hours each
week, for a total program duration of 5 months.
5.
What is the structure and format
of the program?
At CareerFoundry, we understand the value of flexibly-paced learning, so while there is an overall
completion deadline, you can complete tasks and projects in a way that fits your schedule. We
advocate a learning-by-doing approach. This means that you’ll have the opportunity to apply
what you’ve learned directly to projects that go into your final portfolio. You’ll use the portfolio to
present your finest work to potential employers.
During the program, we’ll send you gentle reminders to keep you on track if you start to fall
behind. We want you to succeed, so don’t worry if you’ve struggled to complete online courses in
the past—at CareerFoundry, you’ll get the support you need.

Program Outline
The program takes you through the entire UX design process, from identifying human
needs and motivations to the presentation of a portfolio-ready, marketable product.
You’ll begin by learning to think like a UXer, analyzing your product’s competitors, and
understanding your own users by creating personas based on user research.
As you work through the program, you’ll explore every detail of the design process
and apply it to your own product, from information architecture, user flows, and paper
prototypes to user testing, visual design, and high-fidelity wireframes. The final stage
of the program focuses on refining all your deliverables, publishing your portfolio, and
creating a final video presentation of your work.
Our UX Design Program is divided into three parts:
Intro to UX Design
lasts three weeks (full-time) or six weeks (part-time) and comprises one Achievement
based on 8 tasks.
Page 8
Immersion
is the second part of the program during which you’ll be immersed in the mindset of
a UX designer through hands-on application of the design processes and tools that
UX professionals use every day. It consists of six Achievements, based on several
tasks each.

Achievement 3 - Foundational Design

publishing your online portfolio, and creating a video demo of your work.
UX Specializations
UI for UX Designers

expertise to your list of skills—it’s a sure way to stand out from the crowd.

Which tools will you use on the program?
You will be free to try out a variety of different tools and you will find
demonstrations of how to use some of them throughout the program. You can
find the options for each type of software below:
Sketch and/or Adobe XD are the only tools you’ll need to pay for, the rest are
free or come with free extended trials provided by CareerFoundry. Depending
on which specialization course you choose, you’ll also use a few more tools:

8.
What kind of projects will you be working on?
You’ll have the opportunity to add three new projects to your portfolio as part of our UX
Design Program—one for each program segment. On the Intro to UX Design course,
you’ll research, prototype, and test a complete set of designs for a vocabulary-learning
app. During Immersion, you’ll get to choose from one of four unique project briefs,
allowing you creative freedom to explore your interests:
VELA Expert
Finally, each Specialization course offers its own project options, allowing you to
expand on what you’ve learned in Immersion and hone your skills in a specific aspect
of UX:

What will your portfolio look like?
You can choose to publish your portfolio pages on sites like Dribble and Behance, or your own
personal website (if you have one). If you’re interested in setting up your own portfolio page,
we’ll teach you how to do this in our Job Preparation course. Alternatively, you can code your
own website from scratch by choosing to take part in the Frontend Design specialization course
available as part of this program.
Here are some examples of projects created by some of our UX Design Program graduates:

Should I choose UX Design or UI Design?
If you would like to focus your career on UX design but also like the idea of mastering
some UI design skills, we recommend taking the UX Design Program with the UI design
specialization. You’ll become an expert in UX while learning some key UI principles which
will prepare you well for a combined role.
It’s also easier to break into UX design without a bachelor’s degree or prior experience than it is
with UI design. After you graduate from the UX Design Program, you’ll be able to apply for UX
design roles that require some knowledge of UI. Remember: These roles will often be titled “UX/
UI designer,” so bear that in mind!
If you’d like to work primarily as a UI designer, take the UI Design Program. You’ll be able
to focus on the skills and tools you’ll need as a UI designer, but the program covers the
fundamentals of UX design. After the UI design course, you’ll be able to apply for UI design
roles that require some knowledge of UX (these are also roles titled “UX/UI designer).
