3. Read the following passage and answer the questions given below. (5× 3 = 15)
The things that make children laugh are often surprising to grown-up people and even those adults who
know by instinct what will amuse them would be at loss to explain the reason. No doubt there are a
number of sources of children's laughter, but one of the commonest is victory over fear. A mechanical
toy which jumps in a surprising way will cause howls of terror in a child one year old and shouts of
delight in the same child a year later. Almost all children love grotesque grimaces, but in the middleages,
when events that looked unbelievable and did not do any harm. Children like tales of horror and creepy
stories so long as home in a well lighted room but out of doors on a dark night they want the sort of talk
that makes them feel safe. Pleasures by laughter and especially all those that come from a sense of
triumph. In later life, we still enjoy the sense of not feeling fear in circumstances which would formerly
have alarmed us but we do not, as a rule, express what we feel laughing. Motorists like dangerous
speeds, aeronauts exult in stunts, mountain climbers rejoice in precipices. This is essentially the same
pleasure that a child feels when his father makes a face full of devilish malignancy.
Questions:
1. What is the commonest source of children's laughter?
Victory over fear for instance the source can be a toy that jumps in a surprising way
2. How is a mechanical toy different to a child one year later?
A year later the same child who was horrified at the surprising jump of the toy may be delighted
3. What kinds of tales do children like?
Children tend to like grotesque grimaces
4. Who like adventures?
The same children/when they grow to be adults
5. Who like adventures?

Pokhara, Kaski

9/3-0/2019

Dear Manjil,
I am very much delighted to learn that you have won the lottery a week ago. Please, accept my
congratulations on this joyous occasion. After all, the amount you have won in the lottery is going
to help you a lot in your future.
All of us here are very much confident that you shall bring laurels to the family and your friends. Now,
it won’t be difficult for you to get enrolled in engineering. I suggest you to get a laptop with all the
software installed that will help you in designing. I have been reported that you delight a lot in
playing Pubg. However, I suggest you to utilize your time properly. Spending too much time in
playing a game is not that fruitful for a student of your age. It might strain your eyes as well.
As you intend to be a successful engineer in the future, I request you to visit all the ancient and modern
wonders of Nepalese architecture in your free time. I also suggest you to get registered in
Engineers’ Association Nepal (EAN) from where you can remain updated regarding the progress
Nepalese engineers have made.
I congratulate you once again for winning this precious bit of luck.

Kindly pay my best regards to aunt and uncle.

Yours affectionately

6. Write a summary about one third (33%) of the following text. [10]
Scientists claim that 'Zoo' should be established to preserve animals or insects. As man has been
intelligent enough to observe and preserve animals both domestic and wild and plants i.e. nature, he
is often rewarded with success. Extremely effective control of many kinds of unwanted vegetation might
be achieved by paying more attention to the role of plant eating insects. To Crete peaceful environment,
it is man who has a great authority to bring the living creatures but ironically it is man who has
actively participated to destroy environment haunting animals and destroying the nature. Therefore,
being civilized and maser of all animals, we human beings have to maintain our best position in the
universe as the guide of all living and non-living creatures. If we create such good relationship among
animals, plant and us, (then) of course, there would be peaceful place and we will live by happiness
and progress. The success of European imperialism has a biological and ecological component. The
large number of humans elsewhere in the world depend on the Neo-Europe for much of their food
and its appears as world population increases. The profits made by Neo Europeans are finite and
limited in the holistic analysis. Leadership in the farm and embassy plus greatness of spirit is the
basic ecological and diplomatic sophistication of Non-Europeans. After ecological imperialism,
colonialism and orientalism continued until the 20th century and neo-colonialism is taking place in
the present world.

Many children die of malnutrition. In many Asian and African countries both adults and children die of
undernourishment. Hunger death is not uncommon in many under developing countries. Parents find it
difficult to feed children. Undernourishment is a silent killer. It weakens the immune system and slowly
disintegrates health. Bad economy is the root of undernourishment. Parents cannot overcome poverty
and the adverse factors of life there is no place for love where poverty lives and hunger strikes. One has
to fulfill the basic needs of the body. There are differences between the spirit and the body. Deeds are
important than words. Mere loving words cannot survive someone. Poverty is a curse on the poor. Health
is wealth. But to maintain health wealth is a must.

3. Read the following passage and answer the questions given below. [5×=15]
As students of science, you are probably sometimes puzzled by the terms 'pure' and 'applied' science. Are
these two totally different activities, having little or no interconnection as is often implied? Let us begin
by examining what is done by each.
Pure science is primarily concerned with the development of theories (or, as they are frequently
called models) establishing validated; these theories (hypotheses, models) become the working laws
or principles of science. In crrying out this work, the pure scientist usually disregards its application to
practical affairs, confining his attention to explanations of how and why events occur. Hence, in physics,
the equations describing the behavior of fundamental particles, or in biology, the establishment of the
life cycle of a particular species of insect living in a polar environment, are said to be example of pure
science (basic research), having no apparent connection (for the moment) with technology, i.e. applied
science.
Applied science, on the other hand, is directly concerned with the application of the working laws of
pure science to the practical affairs of life, and to increasing men's control over the environment, thus
leading to the development of new techniques, processes and machines. Such activities as investigating
the strength and uses of materials, extending the findings of pure mathematics to improve the sampling
procedures used agriculture or the social sciences and developing the potentialities of atomic energy are
all examples of the work of the applied scientist or technologist.
It is evident that many branches of applied science are practical extensions of purely theoretical or
experimental work. Thus, the study of radioactivity began as a piece of pure research, but its results are
now applied in a great number of different ways-in cancer treatment in medicines, the development of
fertilizers in agriculture, the study of metal-fatigue in engineering, in methods of estimating the ages of
objects in anthrology and geology.
Questions:
1. What is often implied by the terms 'pure' and 'applied' science?
Pure science is primarily concerned with the development of theories and Applied science is
directly concerned with the application of the working laws of pure science to the practical affairs
of life.
2. What is the aim (object) of pure scientific investigation?
The aim of PSI is to explain how the events occur. It does not look for the implication of its
findings.
3. Name some examples of basic research.
the equations describing the behavior of fundamental particles, or in biology, the establishment of
the life cycle of a particular species of insect living in a polar environment
4. How are the working laws of science established?
Pure science has its own principles, concepts, theories, laws, explanations, equation etc. Whereas applied
science is one that is concerned with transferring the available knowledge into practical applications.
5. What is the work of an applied scientist?
Applied scientist applies existing scientific knowledge to practical applications.

4. Write an essay in about 250–300 words on any one of the following topics [15]
"The role of Nepal Army in present context" or, "Use and misuse of social media"

Social Media is beneficial when you use it right. It's NOT for stalking people. It's for knowing where
people are, what people do, what they think, and what's happening now to their life. It's NOT for
showing to other people that you're with some people (especially someone you meet a lot of time) right
now, meanwhile actually you don't have the real social time with them because you're to busy with your
gadget. It's for knowing your far distance friends, hard to meet friends and your long time friends, what
they're doing recently, and how's thing going with them.
Many people, especially from the new 21st century generation make the social media as a place to show
of their richness, their ability to do something, and to become famous instantly. In the other side there's
also people who do just natural just they are but they're famous because of their talents.

Every social media have their own purpose. For example, YouTube is a social media who embrace the
use of video as a communications media. In the other side, Instagram offer the use of Photos (and now
short videos) as a communication  media. Meanwhile when it comes to proffesional world and get
connected to people and friends, then LinkedIn and Facebook can be in the top of the chart. I do believe
that several talented people who wizard at their career or job can get benefit from the right social
media. People who do arts and design on Instagram, with routine post and consistent posting materials
can get to 500k followers. Meanwhile people who do photography on Instagram, where photos speak for
themselves, can get to 1m or more followers. Different with Instagram, YouTube can embrace people
who are good at public speaking and filmology. And people who do advance in those matters can get
more viewers and followers in YouTube rather than in Instagram.

When Social Media used wrongly, then the benefit will fade out and disadvantage will come. We've
heard about several crimes committed from social media, whether it's from Facebook, Twitter, online
dating site, and so on. The crimes just not a physical crime, like thieving, or some kind of murdering etc,
but actually from sharing illegal site for underage, showing pornography to the society, and other cyber
crime can threatens the law and humanity and also give an opportunity for crime to happens
furthermore.

In conclusions, we can say that social media can brings more goods than harms itself, when people
realize what they can get and using it right. The age limit from social media is not border for us to go to
social media. I mean when the age limit is 17, that people have to be at least 17 to join the media,
because maybe people already know and able to decide for themselves what's good and what's not. We
don't have to use all the social media, but we only have to use some social media, which can connected us
to what our purpose is. When we want to connected with friends and family, then Facebook is a good
choice. When we want to show our photograph and our artwork we can use Instagram at its best. And
when we want to train out public speaking skill, or want our voice to be heard, then YouTube is perfect
for you. Using it right, bring the benefit to yourself and others.

5. Write a letter to your friend describing the flood situation faced during this monsoon season in your
country [10]

Fewa Lane, Pokhara

Province No. ____

September 12, 2018

Dear Rajat,

I am really tired and troubled for which I am writing to you. I hope you are living happily. Everything is
good here in the family, however, the geographical condition of my area is very devastated. Flood has
struck the region and we are not able to communicate around the whole district. It feels like living on an
island with no resource except some food to eat. Although, my house is at a higher altitude
comparatively, the people around the rivers and dams are deeply affected. Their houses have filled with
flood water and are managing somehow on the roofs.

This calamity has brought in a lot of loss of economy and lives. Staring from 21 July, the flood has killed
approximately 33 individuals which includes kids, men, and women. Death rate of cattle and other
animals has increased following the flood. Anyhow, we are managing to live here and the government
also spoke of helping the families that faced turmoil and chaos in their daily lives. Well, you don't need
to worry because other than water being clogged on the roads, there are not much problems for my
family.

I will be soon visiting your place, once the flood dries or is drained. Write me back soon. Pay my regards
to uncle and aunt. Take care of yourself.

Your loving friend,

Rahul

Mountaineering is the sport of attaining great heights in mountainous regions just for the pleasure of
the climbs. It is different from other sports because the success of the participants rests almost
entirely on their own powers of physical endurance and judgment to reach their goal. The mountain
provides the field of action. Why are people interested in mountaineering? First they have a desire to
conquer nature to achieve the most difficult and the most impossible task. Also, their spirit of adventure
and interest in exploring unknown places provide the impetus to do mountaineering.
One climber must be skilled in both rock climbing and snow climbing. Rock climbing is done on the
uppermost slopes of a high peak after getting through the lower reaches of snow and ice. Snow and ice
climbing involve greater skill and endurance. Ice axes are used to cut steps on the slopes. Cutting a
step down the slope is more difficult than cutting one step up.
Mountaineers should be well equipped with woolen clothes, a wind proof out garment, headgear and
mittens of suitable warmth, cleated boots, heavy socks and snow glasses. They also take with them a
compass, a map, waterproof match boxes, an ice axe, a flashlight, a climbing rope, a folding lantern, a
hammer, tents, a sleeping bag and cooking, equipment. Skis, oxygen-tanks, a camera, a walkie-talkie and
an avalanche gun also become part of a mountaineer's luggage.
In spite of having to carry varied items of equipment they manage to overcome all the hazards on the
way and reach their goal. This requires a supreme kind of skill. In fact, it demands of its adherents
not only great physical strength, but also great mental qualities such as courage, endurance and
determination. These towers less snowy peaks sometimes lure people to death perhaps that is the cost
mature demands of the mountaineers in their attempt to unlock mystery. Nevertheless mountain lovers
do not hesitate to pay the cost because this sport is worth the risk involved.
