WHY WE RECYCLE?

First of all, what (1) did 'recycle' mean? It means taking certain rubbish and sending (2)
them to recycling centres or putting it in recycling bins. (3) Who things can we recycle? Basically,
we can recycle most things made from paper, metal, plastic (4) so glass. Huge machines break
rubbish in recycling centres into small parts. These (5) is then processed into other new things. We
need to recycle because our landfills are overflowing. We have so (6) some rubbish until we have
no space to (7) putting it. In fact, the problem is so bad that many (8) fisherman are finding it hard
to make (9) the living now because our rubbish has killed a lot of fish and other marine life.

River Killers
A dying river is severely polluted and has very little or no wildlife in it. Many of our rivers are
dying. We have nobody to blame but ourselves. How exactly are we killing our rivers?
Whenever we as individuals throw rubbish into drains, it eventually ends up in rivers. This
rubbish poisons the water. Plastic bags and bottles become death traps for marine life. Fish, frogs,
and even freshwater crabs get stuck inside and then starve to death. Sometimes there is so much
rubbish that it literally blocks the water from flowing.
River pollution is also caused by farmers and factories. Some plantation farmers use a lot
of chemical fertilizers. Some livestock farmers release their animal waste directly into rivers without
treating it first. Factories which want to save money also do the same by releasing toxic chemicals
into drains or rivers.
Lastly, we have developers which clear a large stretch of vegetation to construct buildings.
Trees and plants are like sponges. They help to absorb a lot of rainwater and slow down the flow of
water on land. When the soil is exposed, it flows easily into rivers. Too much soil in river water kills
fish and marine life because they cannot breathe properly in this dirty water.
All parties responsible for killing rivers - individuals, farmers, factories, developers need to
work together to ensure we have clean rivers. Our rivers are not only a source of water but also a
source of food for us humans and wildlife.

The Game Addict
Kenny loved playing games. He started playing computer games on his parents’ desktop
computer when he was 13 years old. It was a simple arcade game where he moved a spaceship
left or right to avoid obstacles like aliens and asteroids. The spaceship could also shoot at these
obstacles to earn points. His parents allowed him to play the game for up to one hour per day only.
After that he was forced to leave the study room where they kept the computer.
When he reached 15, his uncle gave him a smartphone as his birthday present. Kenny was
so happy. The phone even came with Internet connection. He quickly downloaded a few mobile
games into the phone.
“Don't play for more than one hour a day, okay?” Kenny's mother said to him. "It's bad for
your eyes. You will end up needing spectacles."
“Okay," Kenny said, but he didn't keep to his promise. Every day after school, he would
play games on his smartphone. After dinner he hid in his room with the excuse that he needed to
study. However, he played games until midnight instead. His parents really thought that he was
studying.
This continued for several months until his examinations arrived. Naturally Kenny didn't do
well. He almost failed a few subjects. His parents were shocked. How could he do so badly when
he studied every night? When his mother went to take his report card at school, his class teacher
told her that Kenny didn't complete most of his homework. The teacher also told her that Kenny
requested to sit at the front of the class because he couldn't see the whiteboard clearly.
Eventually Kenny had to admit the truth to his mother. His parents were very disappointed
with him. A few days later, they brought him to the optometrist to check his eyes. True enough, he
had spoiled his eyes. Because of that, he had to wear spectacles for the rest of his life.

Read the message from your cousin, Samantha.

Hi,
Mum wants to buy me a nice dinner for my birthday. I get to choose the restaurant but the
food must be healthy.
Should I have nasi lemak, salad with roast chicken – or perhaps something else? Let
me know what you think.

Samantha

In about 80 words, write a message to Samantha giving some advice.

Hi Samantha,
I’m happy to give you some advice. I suggest you to choose salad with roast
chicken. It is a healthy meal that consists of fresh vegetables and meat. Although nasi
lemak is your favourite, it is too heavy for dinner. I believe you would want to have dessert
after your meal. There’s a newly opened restaurant in town. I went there last week. The food
is delicious and the service is top notch. Furthermore, the environment is cozy and there is
ample of parking space. You should give it a try. Looking forward to hear about your
birthday dinner. I wish you a Happy Birthday. Goodbye.
Your cousin,
