The Impact of Limited Employment on the Livelihood and Income Satisfaction of the

Residents in Barangay Pinagtung-ulan

Despite the rapid economic growth in the Philippines in recent years, unemployment remains

one of the current issues and critical indicators of the weaknesses that can affect the economy

as a whole. Attributed to this unresolved problem are reasons including overpopulation,

engagement of the labor force in the same industries, and inability to take on available jobs. In

line with this thought, the aim of this study is to broaden the knowledge regarding the concerns

of the residents of Barangay Pinagtung-ulan with regards to the employment opportunities in the

barangay, and how it affects their livelihood and income satisfaction.

graph, the majority of the respondents are college graduates. 20% of the respondents were

highschool graduates, and the other 20% took up a vocational course.

1.00 – 1.49 = Very Low Extent

With the composite mean of 2.86, the data reveals that the residents of Barangay

Pinagtung-ulan encounter several barriers obtaining gainful employment. Seemingly, the

problem of the barangay not having employment programs in the community was one of the
rampant problems that they faced since it resulted in a mean of 3.3 . Meanwhile, not having

enough knowledge and skills was the only one that got a low extent representation. It indicates

that even though the residents have enough capabilities, there aren’t many opportunities in the

workforce that come their way.

3. What are the perceptions of the residents concerning the available services and employment

opportunities affecting their level of livelihood satisfaction in the community?

1.00 – 1.49 = Very Low Extent

The table above shows the interpretation of the residents’ perception of the services and

opportunities for employment that are affecting their livelihood satisfaction. The composite mean

of 1.84 indicates that the residents were not very satisfied with what the local government and

or the local sector provides for them to improve their readiness skills in the workforce. Not only

do the residents hope to have a job that provides better pay and more benefits, but their

livelihood satisfaction is also affected by the lack of financial counseling for the members of the

community. Perhaps, the participants think that even though they couldn’t have a job that

provides a lucrative income, they could’ve at least know how they can manage their penny.

The results of the study revealed that there are many barriers that the residents encounter

concerning employment in their community. Furthermore, they think that there are several things

that should be given attention in the livelihood of the community such as providing training and

programs for the residents and providing more employment and livelihood opportunities in the

future.
