3. Unit description
The oil mist separator unit is used for removing oil particles from the crankcase ventilation
gas. The oil mist separator is capable of removing 98–99.9% of the oil in the crankcase
gases.
The central component of the unit is the electrically driven separator, which is mounted on a
steel frame along with the inlet and outlet pipes. The separator consists of a disc stack
made of antistatic carbon fibre reinforced polyamide, which is enclosed in an aluminium
housing.
To improve the separation efficiency, a frequency converter is used for boosting up the
speed of the electrical motor. The gas flow to the separator is adjusted with a throttle valve
in the inlet pipe.
In case of a separator fault or overflow, the air is lead straight to the atmosphere through a
bypass pipe. The bypass pipe is also used for taking balancing air to the separator from the
outlet air pipe.
The oil mist separator unit includes a variable frequency drive for power distribution,
monitoring and control.
3
1
The crankcase gas enters through the inlet at the bottom of the oil mist separator and
passes into the rotating disc stack. The oil mist is separated in the disc stack. The oil drops
are collected on the separator housing inner wall and drained by gravity through the drain
outlet. The clean air is released to atmosphere or back to the inlet of the engine if a closed
configuration is used.
The oil mist separator is normally started and stopped automatically according to the
engine operation. The separator can be controlled manually from the local control panel.
The manual control is mainly used for test and maintenance purposes.
The variable frequency drive (VFD) includes the frequency converter for the separator motor
speed control, the local control panel and a safety switch. The local control panel consists
of a keypad and a display. Remote control for automatic operation is set from the control
panel. The separator can always be stopped from the local control panel but the start
button functions only when the separator is set for local control. The safety switch can be
used as a local emergency stop.
4. Installation
To prevent accidents, appropriate safety precautions must always be taken when handling
the product. This includes the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety shoes
and hard hat.
NOTE
The transportation and lifting must be done only by authorized persons who
have received adequate training.
NOTE
If the unit will be stored outdoors, keep the container or crate unopened until it
is time for the installation or inspection of the delivery.
For information about the weight of the unit, refer to the dimensional drawing.
When the equipment has arrived to the site, it should be checked for transport damage or
missing parts.
Procedure
1 Check the delivery against the packing list, to make sure that all parts are included.
Make sure that all pipes and other components that were dismounted for the transport are
included in the delivery.
Postrequisites
If the equipment will be stored outdoors before the installation, it must be repacked after
the inspection.
Before the installation, the pipe systems must be inspected for rust or impurities.
Procedure
1 Remove the counter flanges and the protection plates of the pipes.
2 Inspect the pipes visually to check that they are clean on the inside.
3 Put the counter flanges and the protection plates back in place.
Postrequisites
If heavy rust or large impurities are found, the pipes must be mechanically cleaned or, in
worst case, chemically pickled or sandblasted before the installation. A separate flushing is
also needed. Contact Wärtsilä for further advice.
During storage, the unit must be protected from rain, heavy dust and other unfavourable
conditions.
● If possible, store the unit indoors in the container or crate until it is time for the
installation.
● Keep the container or crate unopened if the unit must be stored outdoors for a
long period of time.

drawing of the unit.
● Lift the load carefully, avoiding rapid movements or jerks that may damage the
equipment.
○ Do not lift the load higher than necessary.
WARNING
Risk of crushing. Always make sure that nobody is under the lifted load.
Procedure
a Make sure that the lifting lugs are correctly attached to the load.
b Check that there are no cracks in the welds around the lugs.
3 Attach the lifting ropes or chains to the lifting lugs on the load.
● Use spreaders as required, to ensure that the required lifting angle is obtained.
CAUTION
The lifting ropes must not press against any part of the load when it is lifted.
● The lifting ropes must carry the load evenly. To maintain horizontal balance of the load,
the ropes must be adjusted so that the load is lifted up straight.
CAUTION
The ropes must not get twisted.
4 Before lifting the load from the floor, tighten the lifting ropes by lifting them with the
crane.

6 Open the inlet valve 2.5 degrees from the point the smoke starts to emerge.
7 Lock the throttle valve locking screw and remove the handle to prevent accidental
change in valve position.
8 Lubricate the inside surface of the rubber hose using e.g. engine lubricating oil or
similar to prevent sticking.
9 Mount the rubber hose on the bypass pipe back to its original position and fasten the
pipe clamps.
6. Operation
The measures to take at startup depend on the state of the equipment. If the engine is
stopped for a brief period only, some of the auxiliary units may be kept in automatic
operation during the stop. Starting after a prolonged stop requires more preparations and
manual operation. The following main operating states are distinguished:
The oil mist separator starts and stops automatically according to the engine operation
when set for remote control.
Procedure
1 Make a visual check of the oil mist separator unit, to ensure that it is ready for
operation.
3 Set the oil mist separator for remote control from the VFD.
Refer to the original equipment manufacturer’s documentation.
4 Check the operation of the oil mist separator once the engine is running.
b Check the oil mist separator for abnormal vibration and noise.
Some vibration is normal during the starting cycle when the separator passes through its
critical speeds.
When starting the unit for the first time or after a prolonged stop, inspect it thoroughly to
verify that all components are in working order.
CAUTION
Do not use the unit if it appears damaged.
● Check the oil mist separator for damage and make sure that it is securely fastened.
● Check the electrical connections for broken cables, insulation damage or loose
contacts.
● Check the unit and the pipe connections for signs of leakage.
Retighten or change seals as necessary. Be careful not to overtighten.
● Check the rotation direction of the oil mist separator motor if it is started for the
first time.
When starting the unit after maintenance work, make sure that all components that have
been serviced during the stoppage are correctly assembled and ready for operation.
● Check that all tools and loose parts have been removed.
● Check that no components are still locked or tagged out for maintenance.
● Check the rotation direction of the oil mist separator motor if the power cables
have been disconnected during the stoppage.
To keep the oil mist separator unit in working order, it must be inspected and serviced on a
regular basis.
● Inspect the piping for leaks, broken or loose flanges, etc.
● Check the separator for noise and vibration.
● Check all electrical connections for insulation damage or loose contacts.
During operation, pay attention to any indications of problems in the system, such as:
● emerging smoke
● excessive vibration
● strange sounds or smells
● leakage.
If any abnormal operating conditions are detected, stop the unit and investigate the cause.
The unit and the pipe connections should be inspected for leaks on a regular basis. Pay
attention to signs of leakage when the unit is in operation.
If leaks are found, stop the unit until the cause of the situation has been investigated and
the leak repaired. Any abnormal leaks, even small ones, should be repaired as soon as
possible. The area must be properly cleaned after collecting any leaked oil.
To prevent leaks, replace worn seals and other components as necessary in connection
with the scheduled maintenance work.
An oil mist separator not running alarm is activated in the plant control system if the
separator is not running when the engine is running.
If the alarm is activated, check the following:
● Check that the separator is set for remote control.
● Check that the safety switch on the VFD is switched on.
● Check the VFD panel for fault messages. Close the throttle valve if the separator has
stopped due to a fault.
The variable frequency drive shows a notification on the display when an unusual operating
condition is detected by the control system. Shown will be the code, the name and a short
description of the problem.
The notifications vary in consequence and required action. Faults make the drive stop and
require reset of the drive. Alarms inform of unusual operating conditions but the drive will
continue running. Info may require resetting but do not affect the functioning of the drive.
Refer to the VFD documentation for more detailed instructions on managing the faults.
7. Maintenance
The maintenance comprises regular inspections, preventive maintenance and replacement
of worn or damaged parts. The maintenance must be carefully done at the right intervals,
which partly depend on the running time and other operating conditions. All maintenance
activities shall be recorded along with the reason for the maintenance.
NOTE
For information about maintenance intervals and instructions on performing the
maintenance tasks, refer to the plant maintenance manual for auxiliary
equipment and to the manuals issued by the original equipment manufacturers.
