W1 Module 1 Computer Engineering Defined

Computer engineering is defined as the discipline involving the design, implementation, and maintenance of both software and hardware for modern computing systems and computer-controlled equipment. It combines principles of computer science, electrical engineering, software design, and hardware-software integration. Computer engineers work on tasks like writing software for microcontrollers, designing chips and circuit boards, developing operating systems, and conducting robotics research.

CPE 6101 / COMPUTER ENGINEERINF AS A DISCIPLINE

Computer Engineering Definition

Module 1: Computer Engineering Defined

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. At the end of this module, the students are expected to understand the
nature of Computer Engineering as a Discipline;
2. Decipher Computer engineering as a study; and
3. Define Computer engineering.

What is Computer Engineering?

Computer Engineering is defined as the discipline that embodies the science and
technology of design, construction, implementation, and maintenance of software and
hardware components of modern computing systems and computer-controlled equipment.

Computer Engineering Concept

❑ Computer engineering has traditionally been viewed as a combination of both computer

science (CS) and electrical engineering (EE).
❑ It has evolved over the past three decades as a separate, although intimately related,
discipline.
❑ Computer engineering is solidly grounded in the theories and principles of computing,
mathematics, science, and engineering and it applies these theories and principles to solve
technical problems through the design of computing hardware, software, networks, and
processes.
❑ A branch of engineering that integrates several fields of computer science and electronic
engineering required to develop computer hardware and software.[1] Computer engineers
usually have training in electronic engineering (or electrical engineering), software design,
and hardware-software integration instead of only software engineering or electronic
engineering.
❑ Computer engineers are involved in many hardware and software aspects of computing,
from the design of individual microcontrollers, microprocessors, personal computers,
and supercomputers, to circuit design. This field of engineering not only focuses
on how computer systems themselves work but also how they integrate into the larger
picture.

Usual tasks Involving Computer Engineering

1. Writing software and firmware for embedded microcontrollers

2. Designing VLSI chips, designing analog sensors
3. Designing mixed signal circuit boards
4. Designing operating systems.

Computer Engineers are also suited for:

1. Robotics research, which relies heavily on using digital systems to control and
monitor electrical systems like motors, communications, and sensors.
