Cavite Mutiny: Spanish Perspective

Cavite Mutiny happened in 1872. It is said to be a brief uprising of Filipino military

personnel at the Cavite arsenal, where it aimed to get rid of the Spanish government in
the Philippines. This resulted in a violent chaos between Filipino and Spaniards and
resulted to the defeat of the Filipino soldier by the Spanish reinforcement.
Furthermore, massive arrest was made against the Filipino and Mestizo Liberal
thinkers and Clergies. Some of them were executed and imprisoned. The most notable
death of those times was the three priest popularly known as the Gomburza.

In the perspective of the Spanish, according to Jose Montero Y Vidal, a Spanish

historian, he said that the Cavite Mutiny is a starting plot that Liberal thinkers in
Europe have devised through pamphlets, propaganda to up-rise against the Spaniards.
Through the statement of Vidal, they highlighted that the liberal thinkers in Europe
and the clergies in the Philippines have joined forces to create an uprising and a big
revolution against the colony of Spain.

During this time Rafael Izquerdo have sent a message to the King of Spain about the
uprising plan against them and electing the three clergies to be the King of
Philippines. Izquerdo and Vidal have stated that the three clergies have enticed the
rebels and Filipino people to join them in getting rid of the Spanish colony by offering
them lump some amount of money and better life. They also reiterate that Cavite
Mutiny was just the start of their plans and after Cavite Mutiny there will be more
executions of Spaniards that will happen until a big revolution will be birthed and
massacre of friars. According to Izquerdo’s investigation, the Cavite Munity will start
from bombing rockets in the wall of Intramuros. On the day of the mutiny, it has the
same day as the Feast of the Virgin Loreto. Those people from Cavite saw the
firework in Sampaloc and they thought this was the signal for them to start the
uprising. This led to the defeat of the Filipino people because of there was no
reinforcement who came because of the wrong signal.

In conclusion, the Spanish perspective of the Cavite mutiny is focused mainly against
the Liberal Thinkers. The liberal thinkers who have sparked the idea of freedom
against the colony of Spain. Furthermore, in this perspective they also highlighted the
role of the clergies in the uprising. The Spanish perspective is mainly focusing on the
point that Cavite mutiny is for the removal of the Spanish colony in our country. In
addition, Spaniards saw this as a great chaos in their government and through their
perspective, we can see how much they hate the liberal thinkers and the Filipino
clergies in the Philippines. We can clearly conclude that they were threatened by the
Cavite mutiny, and they wanted to remain in the Philippines. The mutiny is said to be
the start of more uprising and bigger revolution, and this is the Spanish perspective.
