1998 FIFA World Cup Qualification
A total of 174 teams entered the 1998 FIFA World Cup qualification rounds, competing for a total of
32 spots in the final tournament. This is the first time there would be 32 teams in the finals. France,
as the hosts, and Brazil, as the defending champions, qualified automatically, leaving 30 spots open
for competition.
The 32 spots available in the 1998 World Cup would be distributed among the continental zones as
follows:
Europe (UEFA): 15 places, 1 of them went to automatic qualifier France, while the other 14
places were contested by 49 teams.
South America (CONMEBOL): 5 places, 1 of them went to automatic qualifier Brazil, while
the other 4 places were contested by 9 teams.
North, Central America and Caribbean (CONCACAF): 3 places, contested by 30 teams.
Africa (CAF): 5 places, contested by 38 teams.
Asia (AFC): 3.5 places, contested by 36 teams. The winner of the 0.5 place would advance
to the Intercontinental Play-offs (against a team from OFC).
Oceania (OFC): 0.5 place, contested by 10 teams. The winner of the 0.5 place would
advance to the Intercontinental Play-offs (against a team from AFC).
A total of 168 teams played at least one qualifying match. A total of 643 qualifying matches were
played, and 1992 goals were scored (an average of 2.99 per match).
Europe (UEFA)
The aggregate score was tied 3-3, and Iran qualified due to the away goals rule.

For the first time, the South American qualifiers were held in a single group.
Australia had a 2-0 lead against Iran in the second leg of their play-off against Iran, but
conceded two late goals and was denied a place in the finals. The result meant that
Australia went undefeated in qualifying but still miss out on qualification.
Listed below are the dates and results for the 1998 FIFA World Cup qualification rounds for the
African zone (CAF). For an overview of the qualification rounds, see the article 1998 FIFA World
Cup qualification.
A total of 38 CAF teams entered the competition. However, Mali and Niger both withdrew
before the draw was made. The African Zone was allocated 5 places (out of 32) in the final tournament.
First Round: Cameroon, Nigeria, Morocco and Egypt, the 4 best ranked teams according
to FIFA, received byes and advanced to the Final Round directly. The remaining 32 teams
were paired up to play knockout matches on a home-and-away basis. The winners would
advance to the Final Round.
Final Round: The 20 teams were divided into 5 groups of 4 teams each. The teams would
play against each other on a home-and-away basis. The group winners would qualify.

A total of 36 teams entered the competition. The Asian zone was allocated 3.5 places (out of 32) in the
final tournament.
First Round: The 36 teams were divided into 10 groups of 3 or 4 teams each. The teams
would play against each other twice, except in Group 10, where the teams would play
against each other once. The group winners would advance to the Final Round.
Final Round: The 10 teams were divided into 2 groups of 5 teams. The teams would play
against each other on a home-and-away basis. The group winners would qualify. The
runners-up would advance to the AFC Play-off.
Play-off: The 2 teams would play against each other once in Malaysia. The winner would
qualify. The loser would advance to the AFC / OFC Intercontinental Play-offs.

zone was allocated 3 places (out of 32) in the final tournament.
There would be three rounds of play. Mexico, USA, Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador and Canada,
the 6 best ranked teams according to FIFA, received byes and advanced to the Semifinal Round
directly. The remaining 24 teams were divided into 2 zones, based on geographical considerations, as
follows:
In the Semifinal Round, the 12 teams were divided into 3 groups of 4 teams each. They would play
against each other on a home-and-away basis. The group winners and runners-up would advance to the
Final Round.
In the Final Round, the 6 teams would play against each other on a home-and-away basis. The top 3
teams would qualify.

competition between 49 teams.
The 49 teams were divided into nine groups, four groups of six teams and five groups of five teams.
The teams would play against each other on a home-and-away basis. The group winners would qualify.
The runners-up would be ranked according to their records against the 1st, 3rd and 4th-placed team in
their groups, and the team with the best record would also qualify. The other runners-up would advance
to the UEFA Play-offs.
In the Play-offs, the 8 teams were paired up to play knockout matches on a home-and-away basis. The
winners would qualify.

Listed below are the dates and results for the 1998 FIFA World Cup qualification rounds for the
Oceanian zone (OFC). For an overview of the qualification rounds, see the article 1998 FIFA World
Cup qualification.
A total of 10 teams entered the competition. The Oceanian zone was allocated 0.5 places (out of 32) in
the final tournament.
First Round: Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tahiti, the four best ranked teams according
to FIFA, received byes and advanced to the Second Round directly. The remaining 6 teams
were divided into 2 groups of 3 teams each, namely the Melanesian Group and the
Polynesian Group, based on geographical considerations. The teams would play against
each other once. The winner of the Melanesian Group would advance to the Second Round.
The runner-up of the Melanesian Group and the winner of the Polynesian Group would
advance to the First Round Play-off. In the Play-off, they would play against each other on
a home-and-away basis. The winner would advance to the Second Round.
Second Round: The 6 teams were divided into 2 groups of 3 teams each. The teams
would play against each other twice. The group winners would advance to the Final Round.
Final Round: The 2 teams would play against each other on a home-and-away basis. The
winner would advance to the AFC / OFC Intercontinental Play-off.
