FINAL EXAMINATION
JULY 2021 SEMESTER
DURATION : 3 HOURS
INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
(Total: 60 marks)
INSTRUCTIONS: Answer ALL questions in English Language in the answer booklet provided.
Question 1
(a) The fixed point A is 20 m vertically above the point O which is on horizontal ground. At time t = 0, a
particle P is projected from A with speed 12 ms–1 at an angle θ° above the horizontal. The particle
moves freely under gravity. At time t = 5 seconds, P strikes the ground at the point B, where OB =
40 m, as shown in Figure 1.
Figure 1
i. Calculate the speed of P as it hits the ground at B.
(3 marks)
iii. Evaluate the length of time for which the speed of P is more than 10 m s–1.
(3 marks)
(b) At time t seconds, t = 0, a particle P has velocity v m s–1; where v = (5t2 – 12t + 15)i + (t2 + 8t – 10)j.
When t = 0, P is at the origin O. At time T seconds, the particle P is moving in the direction of (i + j).
ii. When t = 3, P is at the point A. Determine the magnitude of the acceleration of P as it passes
through A.

Question 2
(a) A uniform triangular lamina has mass 3 kg, and its vertices are O (0, 0), A (5, 0) and B (4, 3).
iii. If a ball bearing of 2 kg mass is attached to vertex O of the lamina, determine the new centre
of mass of the lamina-ball bearing system.
(3 marks)
(b) The number “4”, shown in Figure 2, is a rigid framework made from three uniform rods; AB, BC and
CD, where AB = 6a, BC = 5a and CD = 4a. The point E is on AB and CD, where BE = 4a, CE = 3a
and angle CEB = 90°.
Figure 2
The three rods are all made from the same material, and they all lie in the same plane. If the
framework is suspended from B, it then hangs in equilibrium with BA at an angle θ to the downward
vertical (this situation is not shown in Figure 2). Sketch this situation and evaluate θ to the nearest
degree.
(6 marks)
Question 3
(a) Particles P and Q; with masses 2 kg and 3 kg, are moving towards each other with speeds of 7 ms -1
and 5 ms-1, respectively, and collides. The coefficient of restitution is ¾.
.
i. Sketch and identify the type of collision here.
(3 marks)
iii. Hypothesize what would have happened if the coefficient of restitution had been either 0 and
or 1.
(3 marks)
(b) A particle P of mass 1.5 kg is moving with velocity (4i + 6j) ms–1 when it receives an impulse of
magnitude 15 Ns. Immediately after P receives the impulse, the velocity of P is vi m s–1. Determine
the two possible values of v.
(6 marks)
Question 4
(a) A motorcyclist and his motorcycle have a combined mass of 480 kg. The motorcyclist drives down a
straight road that is inclined at an angle θ to the horizontal, where sin θ =1/12, with the engine of the
motorcycle working at 3.5 kW. The motorcycle is moving at a constant speed of V ms–1. The
resistance to the motion of the motorcycle is modelled as a constant force with magnitude 20V
newtons. Evaluate V.
(5 marks)
(b) A uniform rod, of length 8a and mass M, has one end freely hinged to a fixed point A on a vertical
wall. One end of a light inextensible string is attached to the rod at the point B, where AB = 5a. The
other end of the string is attached to the wall at the point C, where AC = 5a and C is vertically above
A. The rod rests in equilibrium in a vertical plane perpendicular to the wall with angle BAC = 70°, as
shown in Figure 3.
Determine the tension in the string (in terms of M and g).
Figure 3 (5 marks)
(c) A ladder AB has length 6 m and mass 30 kg. The ladder rests in equilibrium at 60° to the horizontal
with the end A on rough horizontal ground and the end B against a smooth vertical wall, as shown in
Figure 4. A man of mass 70 kg stands on the ladder at the point C, where AC = 2 m, and the ladder
remains in equilibrium. Calculate the magnitude of the force exerted on the ladder by the ground.
