Ceftriaxone

Ceftriaxone is a third generation cephalosporin antibiotic indicated for neurologic complications, carditis, arthritis, and various Gram-negative infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Common adverse reactions include pain, induration, phlebitis, diarrhea, thrombocytopenia, and leucopenia. Nurses should assess for allergic reactions, monitor for signs of infection before and during treatment, obtain cultures before beginning therapy, and monitor hematologic and renal function during treatment.
