Introduction:
Just as the Internet has changed the way of Filipino’s daily lifestyle, plan vacations, and
how to make a research school projects, it has also affected how people interact socially. By the
use of social media people now interact each other more by just simply sending photo or video to
each other, communicate by the use of gadgets such as phone or laptop, share news and stories,
post a blog that lots of people may watch, and can easily participate in online discussion. Social
media a is the use of Facebook, Blogs, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube for the purpose of
communication, sharing photos as well as videos. However, for the purpose of this study social
media is captured within the use of internet through Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, Skype,
Myspace as well as Yahoo Messenger for communication sharing of ideas, sharing of photos and
videos by users. The increased use of Social Networking Websites has become an international
phenomenon in the past several years. What started out as a hobby for some computer literate
people has become a social norm and way of life for people from all over the world. Teenagers
and young adults have especially embraced these sites as a way to connect with their peers, share
information, reinvent their personalities, and showcase their social lives.
In the past years, social media websites have become common; giving young people a
new way to interact with each other and communicate with the world. Social networking became
popular between 2004 and 2006, after Facebook and Myspace were created. Facebook, for
example has over 500 million members and it is still growing and approximately 85% of
undergraduate students are Facebook users. These numbers are expected to grow since Facebook
users will continue to grow. And this is not only true for Facebook, numbers for YouTube users
closely follow as well.
For the student of NEUST, social media internet became a way of kill time, the most
important things in a student’s life are studying, learning good habits and gaining knowledge to
become a person with moral character. But today, as we see in various studies, this optimal
learning process is seriously jeopardized by students becoming entrapped by the ploys of social
networking. Students neglect their studies by spending time on social networking websites rather
than studying or interacting with people in person. Actively and frequently participating in social
networking can negatively affect their grades or hamper their journeys to their future careers.
Getting too involved in social media can lead to an addiction that inculcates bad habits.
Objectives of the Study:
The general objective of the study was to find out the impact of social media on academic
performance among students of NEUST. The specific objectives of the study were as follows:
To examine the impact of social media internet on academic performance among the
students of NEUST.
To identify the benefits obtained from using the social media internet on the student of
NEUST.
To ascertain what students of NEUST, use social media sites for.
1. What are the benefits that will be obtained from social media internet on the student of
NEUST?
2. What will be the impact of social media internet on the academic performance on the
student of NEUST?
3. How much time will student of NEUST spend using social media site?
This research is important for teachers, parents, and students. This study will assist school
teachers in understanding the impact of social media on their students, allowing them to educate
and raise awareness among students about the potential impact of social media on them. The
study is important for parents since it informs them about the nine potential consequences of
social media usage on their children, so that they can act as a watchdog for their children's social
networking site use.
Social networks are becoming increasingly common among university students as a new way to
spend free time and as a separate channel for obtaining educational and entertaining content. As
a result, it is critical to investigate what impact social networks have on their users, especially
how the use of social networks affects students' academic performance. This research will
uncover this material, allowing the researchers to investigate and learn new things. It can also be
used for future research.
The study was conducted to assess the impact of social media on students of NEUST academic
performance. Fifty (50) students who are actively using social media are the respondents of the
study. It was conducted during the summer semester of academic year 2020-2021. The study
limited only on variables of social media that the researchers assumed that has effects of
respondents’ academic performance. These variables are respondents ‘access to internet, usage,
perception on social media, and their frequency of using it. The respondents not related on
NEUST school will not be included to the data gathering.
CHAPTER II
In this chapter related literatures and studies from foreign and local were presented.
Synthesis of the studies are also found in this chapter for the better understanding on the study.
The advanced and improved usage of social media platforms such as Facebook has
become a worldwide phenomenon for quite some time. Though it all started has been a hobby for
several computer literate’s individual has changed to become a social norm and existence-style
for students around the world (Nicole, 2007). According to Nicole, (2007), students and
teenagers have especially recognized these social media platforms to be able to contact their
peers, share information, reinvent their personas and showcase their social live. Facebook users
often experience poor academic performance. Also, Karpinski (2009) stated that social media has
a negative association with students’ academic performance which is much greater than the
advantages derived through the use of social media platforms. People around the globe have
been addicted to the internet which has given rise to more students using social media more often
than before. Nalwa & Anand (2003) advised and recommended that those who are addicted users
love to use the internet to set back their personal and professional responsibilities in which the
final outcome is poor academic performance. It was highlighted in the finding of Karpinski
(2009) that social media platforms (Facebook, watzapp etc) users usually devote lesser time to
their studies has to compared to nonusers did and subsequently has lower GPAs. It was also
mentioned by Karpinski, & Duberstein (2009), that among the major distraction of current
generation that social media platform (such Facebook, Watzapp etc.) remains a major distraction.
According to Kubey, Lavin, and Barrows (2001), there is a correlation between academic
performance and the dependency on social media platforms. Researchers have conducted
different studies to find out the influence of social platforms users, for instance a study on
‘’impact of Facebook on undergraduates’ academic performance’’, stated that social platforms
have negative impact on students.
Studies found out that academic outcome of students who spent most of their time
interacting using social media are positive because they were able to share and generate ideas
and concepts related to their studies. They also use these sites for having fun as these social
media sites are helpful in their academic work.
A similar study revealed that online social media had improved the communication
between the faculty member and students which facilitate the communication of the correct
information and improve understanding and the development of the ideas and the courses. Based
on the information collected, it is noticeable to say that the use of the social media during the
lecture time is not recommended.
Mensah &Nizam concluded in their study that social media platforms have a significant
impact on students’ academic performance in Malaysia tertiary institutions. Nevertheless, among
the six variables used in their study, time appropriateness and health addiction have a stronger
significant influence on students’ academic performance. This is because time management plays
an essential role in determining the success and failure of an individual. Thus, students who lack
time management can easily fall prey to the negative impact of social media. Likewise, health
and addiction, students who are engrossed with social media platforms ends up skipping meals
which has health impact.
According to Kolan and Dzadza, the nature of social media as a useful servant but a
dangerous master and a two-edge sword has been revealed in the findings of the study. Despite
the benefits that students can harness from social media networks such as sharing of information,
building relationship, partaking in group discussion, there is to some extent addiction and
distraction of attention caused by the use of social media which could have serious consequences
on the academic life of students. One of the negative effects of social media is piracy. The
primary motivator for Australians of all ages illegally downloading movies and TV shows is that
it is free.
According to Landry, social media a tool that could be used for good or bad, it all
depends on the person. Social media has its layers of good and bad. Yes, it is easier to remember
the bad rather than the good but, social media sites have created opportunities for people all over
the world.
Owusu-Acheaw, & Larson (2015) did a study to assess students’ use of social media and
its effect on academic performance of tertiary institutions students in Ghana with a focus on
Koforidua Polytechnic students. Questionnaire was used for collecting data. The study revealed
that majority of the respondents had mobile phones which also had Internet facility on them and
had knowledge of the existence of many media sites. The study further confirmed that most of
the respondents visit their social media sites using their phones and spend between thirty minutes
to three hours per day. In addition, the study revealed that the use of social media sites had
affected academic performance of the respondents negatively and that there was direct
relationship between the use of social media sites and academic performance. Hasnain, et al
(2015) carried out a research to study the relationship between the use of social media and
students’ academic performance in Pakistan. The results suggest, social media has an inverse
relationship with academic performance. Social media platform used in a positive manner it can
help students and youth in gaining knowledge that can be used to enhance their academic
performance
Emeka & Nyeche (2016) also did a study on the Impact of Internet Usage on Academic
performance of undergraduate students using University of Abuja, Nigeria as a case study.
Survey method using questionnaires as the instrument for data collection was adopted. The result
revealed that the use of Internet is a beneficial tool to students and enhances their skills and
capability which will assist them in studies and professional life. Mensah & Nizam (2016)
carried out a study to examine the impact of use of social media on students’ academic
performance in Malaysian Tertiary Institution. In other to measure social media platforms a
questionnaire was developed based on past literatures. The variables considered were time
appropriateness, time duration, Nature of Usage, Health Addiction, Friend-People connection,
security/privacy problems and student academic performance. This research adopted descriptive
research design. Data was collected with questionnaires. The sample of 102 students from Erican
College was selected using convenient sampling method. The data collected was analyzed using
description means and regression via SPSS 21. The Pearson’s correlation coefficients of four
independent are correlated with student’s academic performance while two are not. However,
using the regression analysis four variables is significant which include: Time appropriateness,
people-friend connection, nature of Usage and health addiction while Time duration and
security/privacy problems are not significant. IJSER International Journal of Scientific &
Engineering Research Volume 9, Issue 3, March-2018 1458 ISSN 2229-5518 IJSER © 2018
http://www.ijser.org Raut & Patil (2016) highlights how social media influenced education
sector the study revealed various positive and negative impacts of social media on education or
students. It also highlighted measure to minimize the negative impact of social media on
students’ academic performances such as; moderating their access to social media sites, reducing
the amount of time spent on social network sites. Zahid, et al (2016) did a study to determine the
effect of growing use of social media sites on the academic performance of the students of
universities and colleges. On the basis of random sampling, 300 students were selected.
Questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection. The questionnaire received from
respondents were analyzed with descriptive statistic. Results indicate that the effect of social
media can be positive Tamayo & dela Cruz (2014) studied relationship between the use of Social
Media sites and the Academic Performance of the the students of Bachelor of Science in
Information Technology at Centro Escolar University Malolos. The study shows that using
Social Media impedes student’s learning and directly affects the students’ attendance at school.
The result of the analysis was plotted in a scatter diagram to show a clear view of correlation or
relationship between the variables. Social Media and Academic Performance has effect to each
other. It only means that when a student gets to involve with the use of Social Media it effects his
performance in class activities and overall academic performance
Conceptual Framework:
Social
Media
Hypothesis:
H1: There is a significant relationship in Time spent in social media impacts academic work and
students’ NEUST academic performance.

NEUST academic performance.
H4: There is a significant relationship between health addiction and students’ NEUST academic
performance.
Methodology:
The respondents of this study will be from the school of NEUST, where the students are
found. To collect data, the researchers will distribute questionnaire to a certain number of
respondents. This will serve as basis of the researcher and how the social media internet affects
the students of NEUST.
The primary data will be collected from the students of NEUST. These data will be
gathered directly from the respondents through a survey/questionnaire. The researcher will seek
permission on the higher up to conduct the survey on the students by requesting an approval for
the research. The research will only be in NEUST and only the students of the school can
participate as a respondent. The researchers will approach the respondents of the study for the
accreditation to gather personal information of the respondents together with the information
regarding the effects of social media on the student and in their academic performance.
Data Analysis:
H1: There is a significant relationship between the time that was spend on social media and the
students of NEUST it will affect the students to cope on their activities, because the time that
was supposed to study is put more into browsing and opening social accounts and apps.
H2: There will be a significant relationship between lack of study and the students of NEUST,
because the social media affects how they study normally, they supposed to read instead of
watching on internet.
H3: There is a significant relationship between friends and people connection and the student of
NEUST as they can help each other through social media to gain access on more information as
they communicate with friends through social media.
H4: There is a significant relationship between health addiction and students of NEUST as they
can spend lot of time on social media they lack of sleep and sometimes lack of eat that can cause
bad to the health of the student and it can lead to failing of there academic performance because
of poor health of body and mind.
Conclusion:
Owing to rapid technological advancements in recent years, the use of social media has
grown in popularity all over the world. Social networking sites are used by people from all walks
of life. Many people, especially students, have become so accustomed to social media that they
can spend a significant amount of time on it. The aim of this study was to see how social media
affects the student of NEUST academic performance as success of students the results showed
that spending too much time on social media can have a detrimental impact on students'
academic performance. As a result, we believe that in order for students to be more effective,
they should limit the amount of time they spend on social media.
