HISTORY OF VOLLEYBALL

On February 9, 1895, in Holyoke, Massachusetts (USA), William G. Morgan a YMCA physical

education director, created a new game called Mintonette as a pastime to be played preferably indoor and by
any number of players. The game took some of its characteristics from tennis and handball. Another indoor
sport, basketball, was catching on in the area, having been invented just ten miles (sixteen kilometers) away
in the city of Springfield, Massachusetts only four years before. Mintonette (as volleyball was then known)
was designed to be an indoor sport less rough than basketball for older members of the YMCA, while still
requiring a bit of athletic effort.

The first rules, written down by William G. Morgan, called for a net 6 feet 6inches (1.98 meter) high, a
24 x 50-foot (7.8 x 15.2 meter) court, and any number of players. A match was composed of nine innings
with three serves for each team in each inning, and no limit to the number of ball contact for each team
before sending the ball to the opponents’ court. In case of a serving error, a second try was allowed. Hitting
the ball into the net was considered a foul (with loss of the point or a side out) except in the case of the first-
try serve.

B. Examples

The game volleyball, originally called “mintonitte” was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan after the
invention of basketball only four years before. Morgan A graduate of the Springfield College of the YMCA,
designed the game to be a combination of the basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball.

Volleyball is team sport in which two team of six player are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points
by grounding a ball on the other team’s court under organized rule.

The first volleyball net, borrowed from the tennis, was only 6’6 high (though you need to remember that the
average American was shorter in the nineteenth century).
Volleyball is played on a court that measures 29feet, 6inches wide, and 59feet long. The net height is 7 feet, 11
5/8 inches for women. A team consists of 12 players and 3 back row players. The different position on a team
are passer, digger, spiker, blocker, server and setter.

The offensive style of setting and spiking was first demonstrated in the Philippines in 1916. Over the years that
followed. It became clear that standard rules were needed for tournament play, and thus the USVBA (United
State Volleyball Association) was formed in 1928.
