REDDY'S HACKATHON

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Dr. Reddy's Laboratories is an Indian multinational pharmaceutical company located in Hyderabad,

Telangana, India. Dr. Reddy's manufactures and markets a wide range of pharmaceuticals in India
and overseas. The company has over 190 medications, 60 active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs)
for drug manufacture, diagnostic kits, critical care, and biotechnology products. We aim to create
innovative products, services, and digital business models with the patient at the centre of our
efforts.

DR REDDY’S AND DIGITAL

Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories was set up in 1984 to make innovative medicines affordable and accessible
to patients around the world by leveraging our deep science capabilities. Today, nearly 40 years
later, we aspire to touch one billion lives by growing our core businesses and investing in spaces of
the future.

It is our belief that digital innovations and design thinking are the strategic levers that will help us to
achieve our goals. We are building on our capabilities across the organisation by deploying varied
digital technologies — think data and analytics tools and systems, many of them native to Dr.
Reddy’s, smart platforms for R&D, digital lighthouses at our Global Manufacturing Organisation,
customer-focused programmes to elevate service, and product development tools at Biologics. The
idea is to effectively address the evolving needs of patients through the development of cutting-
edge products.

Our design wing fosters futuristic ideas to develop beyond-the-pill solutions. It has incubated a small
team of researchers, designers, and thinkers to transform the company into an organisation that
applies the principles of design thinking to every aspect of the customer’s healthcare experience.

In everything, our goal is to take healthcare into the future while keeping the needs of the patient
front and centre. Digital and design are the wings to help us do just that.

NEW DIGITAL BUSINESS MODEL

At Dr. Reddy’s we believe “Good Health Can’t wait”. We strive to create innovative solutions with
the patient health at the core. Good health is not just about providing affordable & innovative
medicine, it also about making healthcare easier to access. With this in mind, we created Svaas
Wellness as a separate entity focused on digital business models.

At Svaas wellness we have created a platform for Indian market that provides seamless OPD services
by creating an ecosystem that connects Insurance companies, Pharmacies, Diagnostic Labs, and
Doctors. Insurance company underwrites the OPD insurance which patients can utilize via Svaas
platform. All the users covered under OPD insurance are corporate employees where their
employers provide OPD insurance cover as a part of their employee benefits. Users can avail both
physical and virtual doctor consultations, order medicines, and book lab & diagnostic tests in a
seamless cashless manner.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Medicine delivery is one of the most important links in providing the seamless OPD platform.
At Svaas, we are still struggling to find an optimal solution to medicine delivery needs of the patients
on our platform. However, the solution isn’t as simple as repurposing the grocery delivery or cloud
kitchen models for medicines. There are multiple challenges which increase the complexity of the
problem:
1. Prescription is mandatory to purchase medicines as per the law.
2. Registered pharmacist at the pharmacy should verify and certify the medicines being
delivered.
3. Users are reluctant to order alternative of a particular brand prescribed by their doctor. If
one brand is to be substituted by another, a registered pharmacist can only do the
substitution, adding to complexity and cost of each transaction.
4. Cases where prescriptions are not digital
5. There are more than 650+ branded manufacturers in India however only around 200 are
available in a given city.
6. A lot of the brands which a particular doctor prescribes is available in the geographical area
around the doctor.
7. The current fill rate of any local pharmacy is <60% which makes the hyperlocal models very
difficult to execute.
8. There is a huge problem of counterfeit medicines which needs to be addressed. Users will be
reluctant to order medicines if they don’t trust the source.
9. Some medicines need temperature control and there is no way to control and detect if
temperature excursion occurred.

HACKATHON DELIVERABLE

Keeping the above constraints in mind define a model that can provide medicine delivery within 1
hour while ensuring that fill rate is >90% and no counterfeit medicines are delivered. Winning model
will be the one that provides a practical solution to problem while maintaining a positive unit
economics.
