MODULE IN GE 103 (Science, Technology, and Society)

MODULE I: GENERAL CONCEPTS IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY

Intended Learning Outcome: At the end of this module, the student must have;
1. identified the great Filipino inventors and their inventions through video.
2. traced the historical development of Science and Technology by identifying
the contributions made in every period (Ancient, Medieval, and Modern
Times).
3. conducted an interview regarding impact of science and technology amidst
pandemic.

A. Introduction

This part highlights significant technological developments throughout

history that shaped human civilizations. In quest for a better life, humans had made
several inventions that brought progress to the nation and to the world as well, in
terms of economy and improvement to peoples’ lives. It all started from the Ancient
times, to Medieval/Middle ages, and to the Modern times. Several contributions
were made by different scientists with different nationalities such as, Sumerians,
Babylonians, Egyptians, Romans, Greek, and the Chinese. They all had great
contributions to our society in terms of science and technology.

We, Filipinos also played important role in shaping the society through
scientific and technological developments. We also have great inventors and
scientists that had contributed to our country and to the world as well. Science and
technology have many contributions to Philippine nation-building. The Philippine
government had made several policies in terms of contributing to the development
of science and technology in our country.

B. Activities

A. STANDING ON THE SHOULDER OF THE GIANTS

From the three time periods (Ancient, Medieval, and Modern) choose only one
period and search for one great achievement during their time period or you can
choose Philippine inventions and accomplish the following:

1. Draw or print pictures of your chosen achievement. Collect and paste these
inventions on a long bond paper and design it with a theme appropriate to
the assigned time period and put a caption on how each invention works.
Post it on your face book and let’s see if how many of your classmates/
friends will like it. Note: Keep your hard copy and submit it with your module
1. This will be your project for the term. Screenshot your post 2 days after
and send it to my messenger account. Additional points will be added to your
project. Below is the point system to be used:

40 to 50 likes = 5 pts 10 to 20 likes = 2 pts

30 to 40 likes = 4 pts 1 to 10 likes = 1 pt

20 to 30 likes = 3 pts

A. Watch the video in the YOUTUBE, “The World’s Greatest Inventions”

After watching the video answer the following questions;
1. How many inventions were presented?
- There are 1O inventions that were presented in the video.
2. Of the inventions presented which one do you think is the most
helpful/useful to you? Why?
- As the world scrambles to develop an inoculation against Covid-19, it’s
worth understanding the usefulness of vaccine. Everyone needs vaccine
especially during these trying times of pandemic for it is the only hope of the
humanity. Vaccination is the administration of a vaccine to help the immune
system develop protection from a disease (wikipedia). All of the 10
inventations that were shown have their own unique usefulness but for me
there is nothing more helpful than the use of vaccine. As we facing this tragic
phenomena we are all hoping for a miracle to happen and that is to find a
cure and vaccine against this virus.

3. What have you realized after watching the video? Describe it in 3

sentences.
- I am still in awe and to think that all of the things that we are now using
have a great history is such a good feeling. Take for example the lights and
electricity, can you imagine what our world will be without it? Cause I can’t,
maybe there will be other sources but not as great as what it is today. I
sudenly have the urge to create something and bring a change to our
community, I wonder what could it be.

ANALYSIS:

A. Based on the video you have watched, complete the table.

TIME PERIOD Contributions

Ancient Time

- The Calendar

The Mesopotamian calendar was one of

the humankind’s first calendars. Sumerian
astronomers were the first to regulate the
archaic calendar. The months were divided into
four weeks of seven days, in accordance with
the phases of the moon, leaving out the last two
days of each month, hence the calendar of 12
months and 360 days.

- Irrigation

Being surrounded by two rivers, agriculture in

Mesopotamia was one of the main ways to
stock up on goods. Above we have already
mentioned that one of Mesopotamia’s
contributions to modern-day culture was the
plow to help people work in the field. But in
addition to the plow, another important
advance in culture was irrigation, better known
as riego, in which the correct amount of water
is transported in order to help the crops grow. In order to do this, small canals were
constructed to transport water from the rivers to the plantations.

- Astrology and Astronomy

Assyrian Kings were surrounded by priests and

clairvoyants that interpreted dreams and
omens based upon astronomical observation.
These Kings put the astronomers in charge of
finding out the best dates to begin important
projects such as the building of temples, and
when to start wars…their predictions were also
quite accurate.
Medieval/Middle
Mechanical Clock
Ages

Timekeeping devices have emerged since the ancient

world, but it was not until the Middle Ages that the
technology was invented that allowed for mechanical
clocks to accurately keep track of time.

-Eyeglasses

Although we are not sure who can be credited

with the invention of eyeglasses, this device
could be found in Western Europe the latter
years of the 13th century. Its ability to correct
vision problems makes it a much it one of the
most useful medieval inventions and a great benefit to hundreds of millions of people
today.

- Quadrant and Astrolabe

Being able to measure the distance between

two objects, they proved to be useful
instruments in astronomy, navigation and
surveying. Eventually these devices would be
replaced by more modern inventions, but the
concepts behind the quadrant and astrolabe
have remained important for science and technology.
Modern Time - The Internet

Internet, the most useful

technology of modern times which
helps us not only in our daily lives
but also in professional lives. For
educational purposes, it is widely
used to gather information and to
do research or add to the
knowledge of various subjects.
Internet plays a very vital role in
education.

- Gadgets

Today we use various

electronic gadgets in our daily
life. Everything from cooking to
music uses electronics or electronic
components in some
way.Gadgets also play a
vital role in the educational field
in order to improve their skills and
knowledge. It is very important for
them since they need to improve
their knowledge power to gain
success in the future.

-- Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi technology may be used to provide Internet access to devices that are within the
range of a wireless network that is connected to the Internet. The coverage of one or
more interconnected access points (hotspots) can extend from an area as small as a few
rooms to as large as many square kilometres.
QUESTION: What do you think is the impact of the contributions of Science and
Technology in our present situation? Answer in one complete sentence.

- The accumulation of scientific knowledge and new technologies has

transformed human life, Science and Technology helped provide people with
standards of warmth, cleanliness, nutrition, medical care, transportation,
and entertainment far beyond from it is way back then.

ABSTRACTION:

The state of science and technology of a country largely determines its socio-
economic progress. In other countries of the world including the Philippines science
and technology has undergone a tedious process of development. History will show
that there were traces of indigenous technology used by our forefathers as early as
the prehistoric times. There is no doubt that with the passing of the years, science
and technology has improved immensely with the progress of mankind.
Breakthroughs in science and technology have improved the lives of people across
the globe, but it posed also serious concerns to mankind because of the improper
implementation of technology. The challenge therefore is for us to determine the
type of future we need to have and then create relevant technologies which will
make the world a wonderful place for us to live in.

APPLICATION:

Conduct an interview to your neighbors or friends who are working( at least 40 years
old and above) using the guide questions given below. Choose at least 6 to 7 key
informants as to gather data regarding the relevance of Science and Technology in
their work and in this present situation amidst this pandemic.

______________________________________

Note: Summarize the Perceptions of your Respondents by making a comic strip or

video clips and have it posted in your Facebook for information dissemination.

- Majority of my participants chose to remain anonymous, so to respect their decision

I will just summarize their responses through a comic strip and post it on facebook
afterwards.

Mostly of my key respondents were teachers. They have shown to me that the
way of learning and teaching nowadys is really different from way back their time.
Then, they are just using the blackboard and visual aids written on a manila paper or
cartolina but now, they are already using their white screens and projector. Then,
they are just manually taking down and computing the GWA of their students by the
use of calculator but now, with just one click of this software called Excel they can
now imput the grades and see the results within a second.

But during these trying times, they see it as a more challenging way to cope up
in everything. There are things that they needed to use and learn because it is
essential in today’s situation and mode of learning. However, there are no things that
a teacher cannot do, they always find a way just to help themselves and their
students. In this time of pandemic, technology enabled them to work effienciently
interms of time management, accuracy and productivity.

Indeed, technology maybe complex but it helped them by being connected with
people, especially to their learners & their parents even when they are working at
home possible thus limiting contact with others to ensure their safety.
