PHILOSOPHY OF ADMINISTRATION
The primary purpose of higher education administration and academic programming
is to provide an environment in which individuals can work together cooperativel
y to serve the needs of the students by accomplishing the goals of the instituti
on. Administration should be a democratically oriented process designed to foste
r an atmosphere in which staff members assist one another, plan together, and fr
eely exchange ideas for the betterment of the institution. A structure must be
developed that allows all stakeholders to participate in the decision making pr
ocess. People grow as they engage in problem solving while seeking answers to pr
ogrammatic issues. Administrators should simultaneously conduct needs analysis,
oversee both curriculum and instructional design, integrate various learning fo
rmats, and continually monitor programmatic needs in order to uphold the institu
tion's mission. Relating to subordinates in a democratic manner fosters the deve
lopment of high staff morale and creates the group cohesiveness that is critical
in distance education.
