Why is it important to study the patterns of natives' responses to Spanish colonization of the
Philippines, 16th to early 19th century?
In studying their patterns of response, we can understand as to what led the Spaniards to colonize us.
For example, if our response was positive, we welcomed them on our shores and greeted them nicely.
This would mean that the Spaniards would exploit our goodness and then take over our country. And if
our response were negative, we would have fought them and war would take place. Although we know
that there was a war before the Spanish could fully colonize us, this would even be advantageous to
them. They would be able to label us as savages and tell their motherland to send back up because they
would “enlighten these savages” and then would be outnumbered and the Philippines would still be
colonized nevertheless. By giving importance to studying the Philippine natives’ response patterns,
questions and factors that led as to why the Spaniards colonize us will be answered. Although, these are
not the only reasons as to why the Spaniards colonized us.
What do you think was missing in all the early uprisings from early 16th to early 19th century that
none of them succeeded to end the Spanish colonization of the Philippines? Explain your answer.
I think what was lacking, not missing, was a sense of unity between the Filipinos. The Spanish did not
only colonized us and exploit our country but they divided us through social classes even before the
Spanish rule we already had social classes. Because of these social classes, Filipinos were divided and
lacked a sense of unity with one another. Some thought they were higher than other because they were
placed higher in society. Some sided with the Spaniards because they, themselves, did not experience
the prejudice, injustices and discrimination. Not just that, they were afraid of what they would be losing
if they joined the revolt/s – their place in society.
Hypothetical question, what could have had happened to the Philippines if it was not colonized by
Spain in the 16th century? Present 2 hypothetical but historically-sound answers.
Frist thing would be we would still be in a Sultanate state. We would still have Sultans – a country ruled
over by Islamic Royalty. Without the Spanish colonization, we wouldn’t have been introduced to other
types of systems of governments.
The second thing would be the majority of the religion and belief would be Islamic. Without the Spanish
influence Christianity would never come to us and we would never learn about it. Islamic beliefs and
faiths would take over the country.
