PRE-HEATING PROCEDURE FOR NOZZLE AND Revision : 00
DOWNCOMER Date :
Page : 1 of 1

1.0Scope:
This procedure shall be used as the guideline for pre-heating of nozzle and downcomer by electric
resistance coil. The aim of this procedure to maintain temperature 100°C (Minimum) at the specified area.

2.0 Responsibility:
Welder / welding operator, HT operator, production and welding engineer are responsible for its
implementation.

3.0 Procedure:
3.1 Nozzle welding (Set-In and Set-On)
3.1.1 After set-up as per drawing, wrap the coil properly from inside of the shell.
3.1.2 Cover complete coil with insulation band and thermal cloth such that it occupies the space
around the welding joint by 3 times of the shell thickness or 300 mm., whichever is less.
3.2 Downcomer welding.
3.2.1 After set-up as per drawing, wrap the coil with insulation band and thermal cloth from
outside of the shell such that it covers half portion of the downcomer forging and 300
mm. of the shell, around the welding joint.
3.2.2 After completion of inside welding and B. G. from outside, wrap the coil from inside of the
shell as stated above.
3.3 To hold the coil, insulation band and thermal cloth at it’s place, weld only identified P1 material or
carbon steel electrode stubs.

4.0Temperature control.
4.1 Attach minimum 2 Nos. of calibrated thermocouples, one at shell and other at nozzle /
downcomer with capacitor discharge machine. Calibrated recorder shall print the thermocouple
output continuously and the chart shall be monitored randomly by production / welding engineer.
4.2 Welder / welding operator shall check the temperature with thermal chalks before start of
welding on the shell from outside as well as on the nozzle / downcomer. He shall confirm the
temperature 100°C (Min.) at 50 mm. all around the welding joint.
4.3 Welder / welding operator and HT operator shall instructed to maintain minimum temperature
100°C and maximum temperature 250°C of the welding joint during welding.
4.4 In case of variation in temperature observed on the shell and the nozzle / downcomer, welder /
welding operator shall inform HT operator and he will adjust controller for required temperature.
4.5 During interruption in welding (Lunch / shift change break) heating shall continued and HT
operator shall take care of the required temperature at the welding joint.
4.6 After completion of welding, total welding joint shall be allowed to cool slowly after post-heating
at 250°C for 2 Hrs. (De-Hydrogenation treatment)
