Sci w3 4 m1 3 Task Ws

This document is a worksheet for a Science 10 class at Don Bosco College Junior High School. It contains multiple choice and short answer questions about homeostasis, hormones, the central dogma, mutation, and evidence of evolution. Students are asked to identify examples of positive and negative feedback, graph data related to body temperature and blood pressure, label diagrams of the hypothalamus-pituitary system and endocrine organs, and answer questions matching hormones to their producing organs. The last tasks involve transcribing DNA to mRNA, comparing DNA and RNA, and encoding a short autobiographical essay into RNA format.

WORKSHEET

DIRECTIONS:

1. This is an individual asynchronous seatwork.

2. In submitting or turning in your worksheet, save your file as PDF using the file name:
SURNAME_SCI_W3-4_M1-3(TASK_WS) eg. REYES_SCI_W3-4_M1-3(TASK_WS).

A. Analyze each statement. Write PF if it is Positive Feedback and NF if it is Negative Feedback.

_NF_1. The control of blood sugar (glucose) by insulin. When blood sugar rises, receptors in the body
sense a change. In turn, the control center (pancreas) secretes insulin into the blood effectively
lowering blood sugar levels.

_PF_2. Blood clotting. Once a vessel is damaged, platelets start to cling to the injured site and release
chemicals that attract more platelets. The platelets continue to pile up and release chemicals
until a clot is formed.

_NF_3. Temperature regulation in humans occurs constantly. When body temperature rises above this,
two mechanisms kick in the body begins to sweat, and vasodilation occurs to allow more of the
blood surface area to be exposed to the cooler external environment.

_PF_4. Production of human red blood cells (erythropoiesis). A decrease in oxygen is detected by the
kidneys and they secrete erythropoietin. This hormone stimulates the production of red blood
cells.

_NF_5. When a human is hungry, metabolism slows down to conserve energy and allow the human to
continue living with less food.

B. Analyze the problem sets below. Using the data, graph the corresponding figures [Always graph
time on the horizontal (X) axis. Label your axes], and answer the guide questions below.

Problem 1: A patient’s body temperature was recorded over a 24-hour period; the temperature
at each hour is listed in the table below. Graph the data in the space provided and state whether
it indicates negative or positive feedback.

anterior and posterior lobes of the pituitary in a highly simplified way. First, identify each of the
structures listed below by color coding and coloring them on the diagram. Then, on the
appropriate lines write in the names of the hormones that influence each of the target organs
shown at the bottom of the diagram. Color the target organ diagrams as you like.

H. Write a short essay (at least 150 words) describing yourself (details about yourself, preferences,
habits etc.), then encode it in RNA coded format. Write your essay (alphabet format) on the first
box, and the encoded essay (RNA code format) on the second box.

Hello, my name is Lean Leopold A. Lasay and here are simple details that I do and my preferences that
build my personality. Details about myself, I am about 5’4 in height, about 50+ kilograms and personally
I think I am fit. I like food in general, I will just about eat anything but not bugs and insects. I dislike
minor inconveniences especially if they can be solved if done properly. MY habits are tucking my hand
under my pillow to sleep and using my forearm to rest my head to fall asleep. To wait a few hours after I
wake up to eat. I don’t like eating right away after I wake up. I like to watch racing sports like formula
one, I would watch it every Sunday. And my favorite team is Redbull racing, and my favorite driver is
Max Verstappen. And that is me, my habits, description, likes and dislikes.

I. Analyze the genetic strands, and answer the questions below.

Answer the following questions below.

1. What happened to the “strand sentence” as it mutates?

As it mutates it the strand became shorter and little by little change the letters..

2. What are the changes made in each strand after it mutates?

The strand changes letters like T to R and changes the meaning of the strand.

3. Does the message in the original “strand sentence” still the same in each sentence.

No, because it changes as it mutates, and each change on the strand changes the meaning of the

original strand.

4. Locate the error/changes in each mutated strand sentence. (e.g. Strand 3, Base 1-T)

Strand 2 base 3 – R, Strand 3 base 4 – E, Strand 4 base 3 – R, Strand 4 base 7 – C.

5. What is the relationship of this activity to the changes in variation of organisms? Explain your
answer.

Like the activity as the strand mutates it changes subtlety but each mutation adds up until it become
completely different.

J. Read the situation below and identify the 5 points of Darwin’s natural selection.

“There are 2 types of worms: worms that eat at night (nocturnal) and worms that eat during the
day (diurnal). The birds eat during the day and seem to be eating ONLY the diurnal worms. The
nocturnal worms are in their burrows during this time. Each spring when the worms reproduce,
they have about 500 babies but only 100 of these 500 ever become old enough to reproduce.”

a.) What worm has natural selection selected:

8|Page
AGAINST (Disadvantage)? _Diurnal worms_

FOR (Advantage)? _____Nocturnal________

b.) Identify the Darwin's 5 points in the scenario above.

Overpopulation
When the worm reproduce, they have 500 babies. __________________________________.

Struggle for Existence

From the 500 babies only 100 survive to grow old and reproduce. _______________________.

Presence of Variation
There are diurnal and nocturnal worms_____________________________________________.

Survival of the Fittest

There is a high chance that nocturnal worm survives because birds eat during the daytime____.

Variations Can Be Transmitted

Some of the nocturnal worm’s offspring can be nocturnal also___________________________.

K. Identify the organisms in each corresponding body part (forelimb) and its function.

Seal Bird Bat Horse Human

For swimming For flying For flying For running For grabbing

L. Write the letter of the correct definition in the blank space on the left.

___b___ 1. evolution a. relics or impressions of ancient organismsx

b. change through timex
___f___ 2. Theory of Natural Selection c. Father of Evolutionx
___c___ 3. Charles Darwin d. individuals of a given species varyx
e. antagonized by intelligent design
___h___ 4. Natural Selection f. common ancestry for all organismsx
g. organisms produce more offspring than can actually survivex
h. inherited characteristics that determines its chances of survival
9|Page i. different organisms, similar structuresx
j. post-anal tail and paired pharyngeal pouches
k. genes that determine their characteristics should have also x
changed
___g___ 5. overpopulation

___d___ 6. variation

___l___ 7. vestigial structures

___i___ 8. homologous structures

___k___ 9. DNA sequence

___j___ .10. embryology

M. Study the graphics, and answer the questions below.

What is the effect of resistant bacterium to the colony of bacteria?

The resistant bacterium survived when bathed in antibiotics. So, it got a chance to reproduce more.
And eventually transform the whole colony to a resistant kind.

N. Answer the question

“Do you think evolution on Earth has stopped? If not, do you think evolution will ever stop?”

No, I think evolution will keep going because like in basketball, men where smaller in height when

basketball first started. Now men are larger and taller playing. We are continuing to evolve if it benefits

us.

O. Write arguments about the resolve, “Evolution is the Guiding Light for Man’s Pursuit to the
Origin of Life” (Agree or Disagree).

I agree that evolution is the guiding light to the origin of life because it give us facts that we are
not the first kind of people. We have evolved continuously to have better chances of survival.
Know that we know that we can backtrack to study what the first of our kind is like.

P. Relate the natural selection principle, “Survival of the Fittest” to your life in the time of pandemic.
Write a brief reflection about it.

Survival of the fittest in this pandemic can be shown by people who are patient and people used
to being indoors having the upper advantage than the people who can’t wait and outdoorsy
people. Because they are used to being inside or can take not meeting people and have grown
accustomed to living in their homes. Rather than wanting to go outside all the time and risk
being infected by the virus
