2. She is considered to be the greatest humanitarian to have ever lived in the 20th century. Mother
Teresa was born on August 26, 1910, in present-day Skopje, Republic of Macedonia.
3. Mother Teresa's real name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. She chose the name Mother Teresa after she
spent time in Ireland at the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
4. Mother Teresa considered the day of her baptism to be her true birthday - August 27, 1910.
5. Before the age of 18 she had no intention of becoming a nun, but she was extremely fascinated with
mission work.
6. Agnes was the last of three children born in her family, Albanian grocers. When Agnes was nine years
old, her happy life was upset when her father died.
7. She attended public school in Skopje, and first showed religious interests. By the age of twelve she felt
she had a calling to help the poor.
8. Mother Teresa was given many awards throughout her life for the work she did to help the poor and
the sick. Mother Teresa was awarded the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize.
9. She refused the traditional Nobel honor banquet, instead requesting that the $192,000 budget be
given to help the poor of India.
10. Mother Teresa was fluent in five languages! These were English, Hindi, Bengali, Albanian and Serbian.
This helped her communicate with lots of people from different communities and backgrounds.
11. The symbolism of her sari was that it was in harmony with Indian culture. The colour blue is associated
with the Mother Mary. White is associated with truth and purity. The three blue bands represent the
three main vows of the order.
12. In 1950 Mother Teresa founded a religious congregation called 'the Missionaries of Charity'. By 2012 it
was active in 133 countries and included more than 4,500 sisters.
13. Because Mother Teresa had no money when she worked in Calcutta caring for the sick and poor, she
had to beg in order to eat.
14. Mother Teresa was friends with Princess Diana. Weeks before they both died they were seen walking
through New York City holding hands. Princess Diana died in a car crash and Mother Teresa died only 5
days later.
15. While working as a missionary Mother Teresa became ill with a variety of illnesses including malaria,
and pneumonia.
16. In 2016, Mother Teresa was declared a saint by Pope Francis. This is called canonization and means
that Mother Teresa is now known in the Catholic Church as St Teresa of Calcutta.
