In this manual you will learn and practice the six steps of the writing
process according to DOROTHY E ZEMACH & LISA A RUMISEK. Then you
will learn about the structure of a paragraph. All of this will be done by
answering the following tasks:

Task 1. Look at the images and discuss the following questions with a partner.

What is happening in each picture?


Which image would you relate to when writing? Why?
Do you think letter B is the best representation of the writing process? Why or why not?

Task 2. Brainstorm with a partner the steps you should follow when writing and take
notes about your discussion in the following space or in the back of this sheet. (You can
go back to picture B to help you.) This should be done in class.

Task 5. Read the paragraph and answer the questions in the back of this sheet.

The RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) was the first
organization dedicated to the well-being of animals anywhere in the world. In England
and Wales alone, the RSPCA employ more than three hundred inspectors whose job it is
to investigate reported cruelty to animals. The SPCA was set up in London in 1824. At
this time it was considered strange that people should care about cruelty to animals.
They were regarded as either food, transport or sport. In 1840 Queen Victoria gave the
organization permission to be called a royal society: The RSPCA. These days there are
almost two hundred branches in the UK.

Final Task.

Instructions. Choose one of the following topics to write a paragraph using the six steps
of the writing process.

 Movies and books often talk about the importance of loyalty and friendship. Tell
about a time in your life when friendship proved to be of great importance to
you.

 It is often said that animals are humans’ best friends. Describe a time in your life
when this saying proved to be true.

 Sometimes we surprise ourselves with what we are able to do. Describe a time
when you accomplished something you didn’t think you could do.

 Moving can be a very exciting but also difficult time in one’s life. Tell about a time
you moved and how it affected you.
