the freedom of expression and information since it empowers citizens to understand the functions of
media and other information providers, to evaluate their content, and to make informed criticism as
users and producer of information and media content .
Nowadays, we are living in the information society, and social media is immersed in our lives. Everyone
can access the internet wherever they are, along with getting a lot of information through social media.
It allows people to know information about all over the world. Many companies and organization use
social media as a strategy to spread their products or beliefs because it is not too much to say that social
media is the hard core of our lives. Therefore, people should learn and understand the media literacy,
which is “the ability to access, analyze, evaluate and create media messages of all kinds” stated by
“Introduction to Media Literacy”, to live the social media situated world in order to utilize social media
effectively in the situation such as business, education and daily life.

Because of the prevalence of the internet, companies tend to be borderless on the earth in terms of
advertisement, and they can transmit whatever they want nationwidely to the audience using social

According to “Internet and Higher Education” SNSs appear to be in the life, including education, and 60%
of students talk about their something they need to do for class using social networking. As a result,
some schools are accepting SNSs as educational tools. (M.D. Roblyer 135) Surely, more and more
schools must be going to utilize SNSs for students higher education. Therefore, students need to know
about media literacy because it helps them to enlarge critical thinking,
Nowadays, it is crucial of being a media and information literate person because we are living in the 21st
century which revolves us with rapid growth of technologies such as television, computers, cellphones,
radio’s and other medium for information. Being literate about media and information will give us
advantage in our modern world today especially in terms of giving and gathering information knowing
best most of the false and accurate information in different kinds of medium especially in media. A
country with citizens that is media and information literate will gain more advantage compare to other
countries which stays in traditional way of being literate such as referring to libraries, archive,
newspaper and etc. Mostly in terms of good governance and accountability. Some other benefits are to
improve the quality of life, improved learning environment and more cohesive learning units. In the
teaching and learning process it equips the teachers with enhanced knowledge to empower future
citizens.
Media and information literacy enhances the capacity of people to enjoy their fundamental human
rights, in particular as expressed in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states
that ‘Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold
opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media
and regardless of frontiers.’
Media and information literacy imparts crucial knowledge about the functions of media and information
channels in democratic societies, reasonable understanding about the conditions needed to perform
those functions effectively and basic skills necessary to evaluate the performance of media and
information providers in light of the expected functions.
A society that is media and information literate fosters the development of free, independent and
pluralistic media and open information systems.
Media and information literacy should be considered as a whole and include a combination of
competencies (knowledge, skills and attitudes).
The MIL curriculum should enable teachers to teach media and information literacy to students with the
objective of providing them with essential tools so that they can engage with media and information
channels as autonomous and rational young citizens.
Citizens should have knowledge about location and consumption of information as well as about the
production of information.
Women, men and marginalised groups, such as people living with disability, indigenous peoples or
ethnic minorities, should have equal access to information and knowledge.
MIL should be seen as an essential tool to facilitate intercultural dialogue, mutual understanding and a
cultural understanding of people.
Media and information literacy has a big purpose in every learner. It is very important to have
knowledge into it and advance education about it. But the come out of this point, majority of the
learners are lack of knowledge on MIL and it manifest of-the-line the level of knowledge in media and
information literacy. According to Wikipedia, media and information literacy recognizes the major role
of information and media in our everyday lives. It lies at the core of freedom of expression and
information. When it empowers citizens to understand the functions of media and other information
providers, to critically assess their content, and to make informed decisions as users of information and
media content.
Information literacy helps students recognize misleading, out-of-date, or false information. It also helps
them sort through the data and interpret it intelligently. Libraries full of books are still available and a
valuable resource for students, but information literacy includes the Internet and beyond.
Teachers are involve into it, they act as channel of information. Teachers help the students to know the
current events or situation and help students enhance abilities to analyze, evaluate and produce
communication in a variety of media forms. Teachers teach the basic education about media and
information literacy. As a guiders to all their learners. They are the medium to educate the learners
about the basic-knowledge of MIL. Environment has a big connection for this study. It came from the
lecture in their parents and the community. A learner gain a knowledge first from their places. It started
from their houses.
