Presenting Complaints

The client was referred by school for the psychological assessment with complaints of academic

learning. Symptoms include slight difficulties in word reading, problems retrieving word and

quantitative abilities. The difficulty causes impairment in acquiring good grades. Upon taking

history from parents and teachers, it was discovered that child had no signs of issues at primary

level. There is no family history present for learning issues.

Tool administered

Slosson intelligence test (Richard L. Slosson, 1963) is a brief individual test of verbal

intelligence designed for use with individuals ages 4 and older. It measures crystallized

intelligence and executive functioning i.e. forebrain. It consists of 187 oral questions assessing

six cognitive domains: vocabulary, general information, similarities and differences,

comprehension, quantitative ability, and auditory memory. Originally developed in 1963, the SIT

was revised in 1991 (SIT–R) and in 2002 (SIT–R3).

Interpretation of assessment

Today more than ever before, intelligence or academic aptitude tests are playing a major role in

student evaluation. Since decisions resulting from psychological evaluation often have a great

influence on the present and future welfare of the person tested. At any level of schooling, there

is a possibility of emerging discrepancies. It is important to identify the hindrance behind the

complications of learning. The need of an assessment is advised to rule out the factors behind

difficulties.

Client’s chronological age is 14 years and 7 months and mental age is 14 years and 4 months.

Mean age is 3 months less than the actual age. As shown in a table, client’s IQ score is 100 which

depict an average intelligence. It is concluded that, client’s executive functioning is normal

which comes under average score range (90 to 109). For components of verbal intelligence,

client falls on 60th percentile, indicating an average intelligence in non-verbal, quantitative

intelligence, memory and retention.

Additionally, the client performed as most of her peers in comprehension and grasp of language

(60th percentile). By integrating the results from a test, client’s cognitive functioning is normal,

her mental age is slightly below than the actual age and her IQ score is 100. Every student has

their own level of intelligence.

Suggestions

For improving the grades, more practice is required. By polishing the skills, one can achieve
