PREPOSITIONS

A preposition is a word which shows the relationship between a noun


or a pronoun and some other word in a sentence.

List of prepositions :

at over behind in
for under back on
from above before of
down below after by
into beside between to
without near among up
upon in front of along across
around during through with

Usage :

A] Use of ‘in :

‘in’ is used with names of countries, big cities, states and in large
towns. It is also used to say about the happening of an event in a
particular year or month.

Examples :

1. Sam lives ______ Canada.

2. My brother studies ______ Delhi.

3. The duck is ____ the pond.

B] Use of ‘at’:

‘at’ is used with places, names of towns, small villages and exact point
of time.
Examples:

1. ____ Bandra 2. ______ 6 o’clock

3. ______ the bus stop 4. ______ night

C] Difference in use of ‘at’ or ‘in’ :

‘at’ smaller area ‘in’ larger area

_____ Matunga _____ Mumbai

_____ Taj Mahal ____ Agra

Note the following uses of ‘in’ and ‘at’ :

in the morning at noon


in the evening at night

Use of ‘in’ / ‘at’

D]Use of ‘in’ and ‘into’:

• In means inside something


• Into shows movement from one place to another( things in
motion ) ( action not completed )
• Into is used when something is moving inside another thing.

Use in/ into in these pair of sentences:

1. The water ____ the swimming pool is cold. Jump _____

the pool.

2. Get ______ the bus before it starts. There are forty


passangers _____ the bus.

3. May I go ________ the room ? There is nobody _____

there, now.

4. Put your hand _______ the bag. Can you feel anything

_____ it?

Use ‘to’/ ‘into’:

1. The frog jumped ______ the river.


2. He ran _____ school.

3. I went ____ ‘ShoeMart’ , ______ buy new shoes.

4. Put the money _______ your pocket.

5. He is going _____ Dubai.

Use of in/ into/ at :

1. Swami jumped _______ the swimming pool.

2. The crayons are _____ the drawer.


3. You can read the introductions ______ the beginning of

the lesson.

4. Sam is waiting _______ the bus stop.

5. We have English classes ______ the morning.

6. He went ________ the dark room fearlessly.

Use of ‘for’/ ‘from’/ ‘since’:

for- for is used to speak of a period of time.

from – from is used to speak about the beginning of the period.


Since- point of time or the perfect time.

Prepositions

Use of by/ with

By and with both are used to say how somebody does something. But
there is an important difference.

We use by to talk about an action – what we do to get a result.

We use with to talk about a tool or other object- what we use to get
a result.

By is also used to refer to means of transport.

Use between / among :

Between : is sued for two persons, places, animals or things.

Among : is used for more than two persons, places or things.

Use beside/ besides :

Beside: is used when the meaning is next to or by the side of.

Use of before/ after :

Use of over / under :
