APA Style is a set of guidelines for clear and precise scholarly communication that

helps authors, both new and experienced, achieve excellence in writing. It is used by millions of

people around the world in psychology and also in fields ranging from nursing to social work,

communications to education, business to engineering, and other disciplines for the preparation

of manuscripts for publication as well as for writing student papers, dissertations, and theses.

Student assignments/ papers should include

1. Title/ Cover page

2. Running head (included in all pages)

3. Page numbers (included in all pages)

4. Reference List

APA essentials

Write the number as a numeral:

1. Numbers 1-9: one, two three…

2. Never start a sentence with a number or a percent. Spell it out.
3. 10 or greater. Write as a numerical number

Decimals

1. Use zero before decimal if number can exceed one (0.23 cm; 0.48 seconds; Cohen’s
d=0.70)
2. Do not use zero for correlations or p-values since can’t be larger than one (r= -.43,
p=.028).

p values

1. p is lower case and italicized. So is t test. F test is italicized and capital letters.
2. Report exact p values (p=.03) to two or three decimal places. If p value is less than .001,
write p
< .001)
3. Can report both p value and 95% CI, but one or other is fine and 95% CI is preferred.

Subjects

1. N for total subjects in study (N=135) italicized

2. n for part of the study participants (control group n=35)

Verb tenses (be consistent)

1. Past tense for lit review, description of study and results

2. Present tense to discuss implications and conclusions.
3. Active tense “There were several conclusions that can be drawn from this study” to ‘The
authors
provide several conclusions”.

Referencing

1. To assist with referencing and citing you may wat to consider obtaining a program called Dr.
Paper. http://drpaper.net/ It can be a good tool to assist with referencing and citing.
2. Purdue Owl writing lab . https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/section/2/10/ along with your APA
material listed on the course site, is a great tool to assist with APA style and referencing etc
3. Using doi's. There may be times when the doi may not be available, although that is not usually
the case anymore. However, if you can’t find the doi use this link to assist.
https://www.crossref.org/guestquery/
4. Using "Retrieved From” is only when you use an actual web link. If you use a web link as a
reference, please make sure it actually links to the article you are referencing. Not a log on page,
main page of the site etc.
5. No web link or doi. If you do not have a doi or a web link. Your reference will need to have the
author's name, year, Title of the article, where it is from, volume issue, and page numbers.

Example of a reference.

Sheppard, F. (2018). APA referencing made easy. Journal of Sheppard Referencing,

20(2), 135–142. (If you have the doi or web link it would go here)

doi XXXX, or Retrieved from http://xxxx

Assignment Expectations

1. Please make sure your assignments are submitted on time. If you are submitting it late

I need to know the reason for submitting late beforehand.

2. Please do not copy and paste straight from internet as this is plagiarism. You can use

online sources but rephrase the sentences. Use APA to cite and reference.

3. I do want everyone to submit assignments using APA format. This is used throughout

Canadian Universities and Colleges. APA is a writing style and format. This style includes cover

page, which I have included under APA module. All the assignments going forward should have

this cover page attached. Moreover, everything will be in Times New Roman, Font number 12

and double spaced.

4. Please check APA module to review APA material on how to reference, cover page

etc.
