I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Define modals and give its characteristics.
Use the appropriate modal verbs that express different functions.
Exhibit courteousness in constructing sentences using the different modals.
II. LEARNING EXPERIENCE
A. PRELIMINARY ACTIVITY

The teacher will ask the students to read the sentences from the story (Makato and the Cowrie
Shell) which contain modal verbs. Exploring the use of modal verbs will help them build their
confidence in using them.

B. DISCUSSION / CONTENT

Modals (also called modal verbs, modal auxiliary verbs, modal auxiliaries) are special verbs which
behave irregularly in English. They are different from normal verbs like "work, play, visit..." They give
additional information about the function of the main verb that follows it. They have a great variety
of communicative functions.
