Welcome to the Dance Grade 8 Self-Learning Module (SLM) on Functions of Dance.

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators


from public institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the
learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their
personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration
their needs and circumstances.

depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a
learner is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant

What I Need to Know

This module was made to guide you students in understanding and appreciating
Dance as an Emotional and Artistic Expression.

Dance is a language that dancers use to move, think and respond. As a dance
student, you must learn specific movement languages that are part of dance genres, forms,
and styles so you can be able to express yourself clearly, concisely and with fluency.

Movement and steps could be considered as words, and rhythms could be considered
as grammar. You as a learner, combine these elements of dance to create movement
sentences. When joined together, these sentences become paragraphs and sections of a
dance work.

What’s In

Hello and its nice too see you again Learners! In this lesson, you will
reflect on how well you understand the functions of Dance. In this learning phase
you will be given activities to diagnose and activate your prior knowledge. Your
expectations and tentative understandings will also be revealed through different
questions prepared. At the end of this module, you are expected to have a thorough
knowledge on the functions of danceof dance and appreciate dance as an art form.

The word “Dance” come from an Old German word “Danson”
Which means “to stretch”. Essentially, all dancing is made up of stretching and relaxing

FUNCTIONS OF DANCE

1. Dance is a means of communication and expression of love and courtship. 

 Emotional Expression – dancing to convey or release inner emotions through


movement. 

 Communication (non-verbal) – dance meant to convey a story, message or idea


through movement. 

 Artistic Expression – dance is specifically rehearsed and performed for an


audience. The steps become more specialized and usually require a certain degree of
skill.

2. It is a form of worship and thanksgiving to the gods. 

 Ritual/Religious worship – dance is used for worship, celebration, ceremonies or


as a rite of passage. These dances are passed on within the community and are
generally not for outsiders.

3. It is used as a form of entertainment. 

 Entertainment – dance meant to engage others, keep them interested, and


captivate the crowd.

4. It is used as self-expression to intensify different moods like joy, fear, anger, hate, and
sorrow.

5. It is a form of exercise and therapy. 

 Therapy - dance uses movement to help individuals achieve emotional, cognitive,


physical and social integration.

6. It is a form of recreation and means of socialization. 

 Social affirmation – dance is for everyone regardless of ability. The basic steps are
usually simple and can be performed solo, with partners or in large groups.

7. It is used to portray the different life activities of the people.

What is It

The concept of this lesson will focus

on the Characteristics of Dance.

Bear in Mind:

Dance is a rhythmic and expressive movement of the body in


successivemovement usually accompanied by music or without music.

It has been said to be the mother of the arts, for it’s the oldest of the art which
actually reflects man’s age old need to communicate different emotions such as joy,
grief, excitement and others.

Dance simply started as man’s own life for almost all occasions, in whatever aspect,
as birth, death healng of the sick, asking for forgiveness war, marriage-were
celebrated by dancing.

There are dances that express thankfulness for a good harvest, expression of the
body.

It uniquely intensifies different moods and emotions that somehow deepen


everybody’s feelings.
