Perfume stuff- Cornely

Perfume was rejected numerous times before finally getting published in 1985 by Diogenes.Perfume
was released in 1985. This book has been translated to over 25 languages, there is a movie and the
lyrics of a song by Nirvana is based on it. This book is especially interesting for the people who are
interested in history and this book is not recommended for people who have no interest in history.
The unusual way of having many small chapters is done by Suskind because it makes Grenouille’s
personality more extreme.
The book is a mixture of reality and fantasy, where the realistic parts in the book distract the reader
from the amount of fantasy that is in the book and the fantasy giving this story is used to make the
character grow and as metaphor, where Grenouille represents the dehumanization of an abused and
abandoned child.
‘’This novel thus can also reveal or explain something of the irrationality of human behavior. To the
extent that we believe we make most of our decisions about others using reason and conscious
choice, the existence of prejudices based on smells perceived unconsciously throws this view into
chaos. This kind of foundation-shaking existentialism is a powerful feature of Süskind's work.’’ -

Perfume is Süskind's only novel but it is not his only work. He also has written multiple TV
screenplays, novellas and essays, as well as published translations of work by the French cartoonist
Jean- Jacque Sempes. He has won various literary prizes for his works, many of which he has
declined to receive. He has given four interviews, according to the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung,
most of which is from the 1980s. There are barely any public photos of him. After a decade long wait
to obtain film rights from the author, Perfume was eventually made into a film in 2006 by director
Tom Twyker however Süskind did not attend the premiere. Süskind's last work of fictional book is
The Story of Mr Sommer (1991), a novella about a boy growing up rather unhappily in a small village
in southern Germany. Süskind's most recent work is the essay On Love and Death, which was
published in 2006. At age 70, plenty about Süskind remains a mystery…
