Australia’s Biggest Family

The Bonell family from Queensland is Australia’s biggest family. Ray and Jeni Bonell have got sixteen
children including nine boys and seven girls between the ages of 5 and 30.
So, how do the Bonells look after so many children? Well, Jeni has a plan and everyone in the family has
a job to do. All the children aged 8 and over need to help with the housework. They each have their daily
chores to do. They wash the clothes three times every day as well as do lots of cleaning and cooking.
The Bonell children are very good at their jobs. By the age of 12, they know how to cook a roast dinner
for the whole family!
Feeding a family this big is not easy. Their shopping bill every week is around $600, but this is not really
so much for a family of 18 people. Breakfast for everyone needs 36 litres of milk and 14 boxes of cereal
a week. Jeni plans all their meals and usually saves money by buying multipacks and looking out for
special offers.
Having a big family is hard work and very tiring and you need to have a big house and a big car as well
as enough money to buy clothes and food for everyone, but people who have big families say it’s all
worth it.
