Unit 2 Questionnaire

British Literature

Welshman Dylan Thomas was born on October 27, 1914, in Swansea, Wales.
He was a reporter and prominent writer in the early 20th century. His most famous
poem, "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night," was published in 1952, but his
reputation was solidified years earlier. Thomas' prose includes Under Milk Wood
(1954) and A Child's Christmas in Wales (1955). Thomas was in high demand for his
animated readings, but debt and heavy drinking took their toll, and he died in New
York City while he was on tour in 1953, at the age of 39 years old.

Unit 2 Questionnaire

1. How does the title itself affect the message of the poem ?

The ironic message given on behalf poem's title affect it because the fierceness reality
of death when knocking on our doors, dares our lives and passions beastly, stopping
many times our strength for fighting in those dramatic moments...

2. What is the tone of the poem ? How do you do that ? Give evidence from the poem
to supporlife,ur view ?

Since my point of view the tone of this poem it's sometimes ironic and others so
human, because Dylan T. pretends to fight against a lethal force that mankind cannot
solve or face it themselves but at the same time so human, because it's inherent to any
man or woman to feel aversion before death... Dylan T. reflects it well when he says in
the poem (stanza 4) "wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, and learn, too
late they grieved it on its way, do not go gentle into that good night"

3. What ideas have been expressed about "grave men" in stanza 5 ?

Even grave men when reaching their death may see with blinding sight yet the little
light they have or the flicker of the light can blaze like a meteor with intensity and
force.
Even though they are old and going blind, they still have power over how they die.

4. Give your opinion and comments about the poet's choice of words, his use of the
villanelle form, the poetic devices or figurative language he used to reinforce his
overall message of the poem.

As I see it Dylan Thomas used different poetic words that figuratively represents the
death - life and the correct attitude before dramatics events as die without fighting if
you know that don't finished the whole reason of existence in present time.
Thomas used figurative words as "Night or Dark" for refering Death or Die, "Burn, Rage
of Rave" for fighting against die without a plenty meaning of fulfillment respect
personal goals in life, "Meteors, Waves, lightning, The Sun in Flight" for trasience of
our mortal life, "Curse, Bless" (Oximoron) for trying his father retakes the normal
behave he had before the present event, "Don't Go Gentle Into That Good Night" for
fighting fiercely before death reality.

5. What is the speaker attitude before death ?

"Rage, rage against the dying of the light" Rhyme used for Dylan to talk about of
fighting against death reality, because he believed that it's necessary to resist to die if
you know that don't finish your goals in life.

6. What do you think Dylan Thomas referred to his father's tears as both a "Curse and
a Blessing ?

The Poet is asking his father to bless as well as curse him, because he doesn't like that
his father die suddenly.

7. Why did Dylan Thomas use the poetic form of parallelism ?

He used it because he liked his father has the qualities of Wise, Good, Wild and Grave
Men in him before the death event.

8. Why did he compare his father to four other types of men ?

The poem uses parallelism as the actions of the different types of men are listed (Wise,
Good, Wild and Grave Men). Each of these four stanzas begins by listing the type of
men in question, then describing something amazing that that group of men have
done.
The speaker ends each by remainding the reader that these men won't let themselves
die without a struggle.
Dylan T. (speaker) wants his father to have the qualities of these (four) men.

** Taken from Professor Myrna Lozano's Whatsapp group.

9. What does the poet mean with this position of his ?

As I see it Dylan T. tried to communicate that nobody shouldn't surrender before the
immininent event of death if you didn't finish your life race yet.

10. How has he set the tone of the poem to build up this theme ?

This poem is full of passionate intensity from the start. The imperative - do not - sets
the tone as the speaker showcases four types of male who rage and do not and in the
final stanza faces his father, who is at the point of no return.

Rage, rage - the advice given to all who face the inevitable mystery of death. This
direct message is somewhat like an old fashioned sermon delivered to those who
would dare to go timidly to the threshold.

And there is strong emotion throughout, from the early and repeated rage to the joy of
dance and the idea of blazing away like a meteor. This villanelle, though compact and
structured, takes the reader away into the skies and beyond, out into the cosmos.

Conclusion

"Don't Be Gentle Into That Good Night" Poem written by Dylan Thomas with ironic tone for
expressing that death reality it's a "Good Night" although the way for saying us that old people
never should be surrender before that imminent event or at least to know that is very close for,
the correct attitude he says on it... You'd never surrender before death if you know that your work
in life doesn't finish yet.

He invites the old people and us too in fighting all time for finishing first our works and purposes
before leave of this life...
