The key takeaways are that the lesson focuses on reviewing 3D shapes and their characteristics as well as sorting 2D polygons by the number of sides. Students will practice identifying faces, edges and vertices of 3D shapes and work as detectives to identify shapes based on descriptions.

The learning objectives are for students to describe shapes according to their sides, edges and vertices, develop understanding of both 2D and 3D shapes, work as a group to determine shapes from descriptions, and demonstrate understanding of mathematical geometric language.

The students will participate in a 2D shape sorting activity, work as detectives to match 3D shapes to their descriptions, create riddles for shapes and use play dough to build shapes from riddles created by others.

Subject/Grade: 3 - Mathematics Lesson/Date: Thursday, Jan13 and Fri Jan 14th Time: 60 min

Stage 1: Desired Results

Lesson Students will review what they have learnt in the previous couple of days with Ms. Mawani.
Overview: Students will practice identifying faces, edges and vertices on 3D shapes by solving a problem.
Students will act as detectives to find the shape that fits the description. Students will also
review polygons and sort them into categories
GOs: Students will:
Describe the characteristics of 3-D objects and 2-D shapes, and analyze the relationships
among them.
SOs: Students will:
Specific Outcome 6
Describe 3-D objects according to the shape of the faces and the number of edges and vertices.
Specific Outcome 7
Sort regular and irregular polygons, including:

● triangles
● quadrilaterals
● pentagons
● hexagons
● octagons

according to the number of sides.

Learning Students will:

Objectives ● Students will sort shapes according to the number of sides, edges and vertices
● Students will develop understanding for different shapes, both 2D and 3D
● Students will work as a group to determine shapes based on descriptions
● Students will sort 2D shapes, including triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons into
boxes based on the # of sides they have.

Stage 2: Assessment Evidence

Formative Students will hand in their 2D shape Summative
Assessment sort as formative and possibly Assessment
summative assessment.

Stage 3: Learning Experience

minutes ** We will review concepts that Ms Mawani has taught them in the last 3 days
Subject/Grade: 3 - Mathematics Lesson/Date: Thursday, Jan13 and Fri Jan 14th Time: 60 min
1.) Review the terms

Face
Edges
Vertices
- Ask students to define and label an example we will have on the board.

- Is this a 2D or 3D shape?
#2 How many sides does this shape have?

Transition - handout 2D shape sort.

Body:
20 Learning Activity 1:
minutes
2D Shape Sort.
Students will demonstrate their understanding for counting and determining
number of sides on 2D shapes by completing this activity
Students will be given a sheet that has a number of boxes starting at 3 sides all
the way up to 8 sides, on the second sheet will an assortment of shapes for
students to cut and then glue in the correct box for the number of sides it has.
EX:
Subject/Grade: 3 - Mathematics Lesson/Date: Thursday, Jan13 and Fri Jan 14th Time: 60 min

Students will also be given a small piece of coloured paper in order to create
their own shape, which they will then number the sides in the last box.

Transition - have students hand in there shape sort

Learning Activity 2: FA - holding up
shapes…
Shape Detective - Reviewing 3D Shapes,
Now that we have reviewed our 2D shape we will now move on to an activity
regarding 3D shapes.
- Students will work in groups of 2 or 3 to complete this activity.
- Each group will receive a set of 3D shapes that have been cut out.
- On the board will be a clue that students need to match the shape to.
- For example it will say this shape has ..
2 faces, 2 edges and 2 vertices
- Give students time to solve with their partners/ group upon which shape
matches the description
When told, students will then hold up the shape they believe fits the riddle.
I will then pull the shape up on the board and have one group volunteer to come
up and show each: faces, vertices and edges

We will continue through the 7 slides.

To review and close up I will have students answer the question through
discussion
What is the difference between a 2D shape and a 3D shape?

Let students know we will be playing a game to solidify our understanding for
shapes!

DAY 2
Stage 1: Desired Results
Lesson Students will review what they have learnt in the previous couple of days with Ms. Muwani.
Overview: Students will be practicing what they know through a fun game. Students will create riddles for
3D shapes and then work with another student/group to create the shape that is being described
in the riddle out of playdough. Students will demonstrate understanding of mathematical
geometrical language while creating the riddles
GOs: Students will:
Describe the characteristics of 3-D objects and 2-D shapes, and analyze the relationships
among them.
SOs: Students will:

I will let students know that we will be doing a fun activity in order to use the
concepts that we have learnt within the last couple days.
Transition - hand out riddle template
Subject/Grade: 3 - Mathematics Lesson/Date: Thursday, Jan13 and Fri Jan 14th Time: 60 min
Body:
20 Learning Activity 1:
minutes
Students will receive a riddle template, it will contain two places for students to
record/create riddles, students will think of a shape and create a riddle to
accompany it. Students may work on their own or in pairs.
** Create RIddle Template, Before letting students begin I will give them an
example, one that I created and one Ms Muwani created

- I have 6 faces,
- I have 12 edges
- I have 8 vertices
- I am used for common things such as games and keeping drinks cold
- What am i?
I have 5 faces, one of them is a square
i have 5 vertice
I have 8 edges
I am typically seen in egypt..
What am i?

Transition - when students are all finished with at least one riddle.
Learning Activity 2:

Once students have completed at least one riddle, we will be working with
others to solve them!

Hand out playdough, one per group

Students/groups will pair up with others in the class and read/show the other
group their riddle.

Students must then build the shape they are describing with playdough, switch
partners and complete the other groups riddle.

Have students switch groups ⅔ times.

By allowing students to build, they will be using different thinking and applying
their knowledge as well.

Transition - have students pack play dough up and head back to their desks.
Consolidation:
Review of Key Concepts/Point to Next Class:

Ask students if 2 or 3 of them would like to share their riddle - remind students
that have already guessed not to spoil it for those who have not.
