Looking Back
Last time, you learned a lot about a play entitled Driving Miss Daisy (1987). It was written by
first in his "Atlanta Trilogy" of plays.
Take a minute and recall the ideas you have learned from the play.
The story is about the relationship of an elderly Southern Jewish woman, Daisy
Werthan, and her African American driver, Hoke Coleburn, from 1948 to 1973.
It is based on the actual family history of the playwright and his own experiences

Originally titled “Harlem”, this poem is one of Hughes’ poems pertaining to the lives of African
American people in the United States of America. This short poem raises concerns about people’s
expectations and the implications that might occur if those hopes and dreams are not realized.

Summary:
The rising action of the play reveals the pregnancy of Ruth. Mama (Lena) has paid the initial
amount for a house in Clybourne Park. Then, she hands the remaining money to Walter to put it in a
savings account for Beneatha’s medical schooling. The rest of the money shall be put in a checking
account in Walter’s name. However, Walter intends to invest the money in a liquor business which
Mama does not approve of.
"A Raisin in the Sun", drama in three acts, appeared as the first drama written and produced on
March 11, 1959 by an African American who questioned the idea of contentment. It made a couple of
historic breakthroughs. It was also the first Broadway show with a predominantly African American cast.
