CRYING
Charles Darwin thought that the human tendency to cry had no obvious evolutionary
purpose. He was almost certainly wrong. More recently scientists have pointed to its social
significance with psychiatrist John Bowlby 26__________ (light) the role of crying in
developing the attachment between mother and child. Many believe that tears, at least
during childhood, are mainly an expression of 27_________ (help). However, the
persistence of crying into adulthood is harder to explain. It seems that the sound of crying
becomes considerably less important than the visual signal it conveys. It may have been
28_________ (advantage) to early human communities as a means of promoting trust and
social connectedness.
Tears can undoubtedly have other causes too. We may cry to express sympathy for those
suffering terrible 29__________ (just). Furthermore, tears can be shed 30___________
(volunteer), rather to our embarrassment, when we hear inspiring music or moving
speeches. We may cry when watching a sentimental film, but interestingly, this is more
likely to occur in company than when we are alone. The social function of crying would
seem to be undeniable, but research continues.

Blue diamonds are the world’s most expensive diamonds, with some valued 31_________
over 350 million US dollars. However, no one knew 32_________ recently precisely where
these rare stones came from. Most diamonds are formed from pure carbon under extreme

that blue diamonds were probably formed somewhere 34__________ 600 and 800
kilometres down, in a part of the earth’s interior known 35__________ the lower mantle.
These researchers analysed 46 blue diamonds, all of 36__________ contained minerals
only found in the lower mantle. 37__________ only were these stones formed four times
nearer the earth’s core 38___________ normal diamonds, but they also contain an element
called boron that is mostly found on the earth’s surface. What seems to have happened,
39_________ to the researchers, is that billions of years 40_________, rocks containing
boron were carried down into the lower mantle by movements of the earth’s tectonic
plates, and were eventually returned to the surface by volcanic action.

CRITICISM
It can 41________ a long time to become successful in your chosen field, however talented
you are. One thing you have to be 42_________ of is that you will face criticism along the

you’ve made up your 43_________ to achieve a certain goal, such as writing a novel, don’t
let the negative criticism of others prevent you from reaching your 44_________ and let
constructive criticism have a positive 45_________ on your work. If someone says you’re
totally 46_________ in talent, ignore them. That’s negative criticism. If, however, someone
advises you to revise your work and gives you good reasons for doing so, you should
47________ their suggestions carefully. There are many film stars who were once out of
48________. There are many famous novelists who made a complete 49________ of their

1 The search for the biological foundation of human culture inevitably leads non-
2 verbal communication. Intuition suggests that such communication has been a
3 essential element of the evolution of humans as social being. Without it, the
4 diversity and sophistication of today’s social systems would be unimaginable.
5 However, there is the opposite hypothesis that the evolutionary of non-verbal
6 communication may in partly be the result of our being thoroughly social entities:
7 the social nature of humans may have amplified the evolution of a capacity us
