 Catalytic Promotor And Inhibitor

In chemistry, we use promoters and inhibitors for the functioning of the catalyst which is used to speed up the
reaction. In some reactions, we use promoters and inhibitors with a catalyst which either increases the
functioning of the catalyst or decreases the functioning of the catalyst.

 Catalytic Promotor

Substance which themselves are not catalyst , but when mixed in small qualities with the catalyst increase
there efficiency are called as promoters.

promoter, in chemistry, substance added to a solid catalyst to improve its performance in a chemical reaction.
By itself the promoter has little or no catalytic effect. Some promoters interact with active components of
catalysts and thereby alter their chemical effect on the catalyzed substance. The interaction may cause
changes in the electronic or crystal structures of the active solid component.

Commonly used promoters are metallic ions incorporated into metals and metallic oxide catalysts, reducing
and oxidizing gases or liquids, and acids and bases added during the reaction or to the catalysts before being
used.

 EXAMPLE OF PROMOTER

i)in Haber's process for the synthesis of ammonia, traces of molybdenum increases the activity of finely
divided iron which acts as a catalyst.

(ii) In the manufacture of methyl alcohol from water gas ,chromic oxide is used as a promoter with the
catalyst zinc oxide .

 Catalytic Inhabiter

A catalyst inhibitor is a substance that decreases the rate of, or prevents, a chemical reaction, i.e. it opposes
the effect of a catalyst.

Example: A monomer (e.g. acrylic ester is sold with little amount of inhibitor in order to prevent undesirable
polymerization.

Micro-project proposal

Title of Microproject:

Catalysis

(1.0)Aim of the project:

The project aims at:

• Understanding the phenomena of catalysis

• Team work and group handling

• Leadership qualities

• Time management qualities.

(2.0) Course outcomes addressed:

• To select the relevant catalyst for the catalysis process for given application.

(3.0) Proposed methodology:

• We will discuss on the topic given by subject teacher.

• We will distribute the point to do by every team member (team work).

• We will collect the information, reaction, application related to topic.

• We will arrange all the applicables.

• We will check the project from teacher before submission.

(4.0) Resources required:

➢ Types of catalyst
1.Positive Catalyst. –
“The substance which increases the rate of reaction, when added is
called as positive catalyst”.
3. EXAMPLES

2. Negative catalyst.
“The substance which retards the rate of chemical reaction, when added is called as
negative catalyst”.

3. Auto catalyst.- “When one of the products of a reaction itself acts as a catalyst
for that reaction, the phenomenon Is called as autocatalysis. The substance which
acts as a catalyst is called as auto catalyst.

 Types Of Catalysis:
(A) Homogeneous Catalysis: In homogeneous catalysis reaction, catalyst and
reactants are in the same phase i.e. may be in solid, liquid or gaseous phase.
E.g. Manufacturing of (H2SO4)
By chamber process.
2SO2(g) + O2(g) …[NO](g)……> 2SO3(g) + 2[NO](g)
(B) Heterogeneous Catalysis: When reactants and catalysts are in different phase
then this reaction is called as heterogeneous catalysis.

E.g. Preparation of ammonia by Haber process.

N2(g) + 3H2(g) …(Fe)……> 2NH3(g)

Application of Industrial of Catalyst :

Catalyst are used in industry for various process to obtain the chemicals and
domestic products:
1. Vanaspati Ghee is obtained by hydrogenation of oil using nickel as catalyst
2. Polymerisation of alkenes is done by using H3PO4
3. Ethyl alcohol is manufactured by fermentation of sugar zymase.
4. Cracking of heavy petroleum fraction can be done by silica and alumina gel.
5. Ammonia is manufactured from nitrogen and hydrogen by Heber’s process in
presence of iron as catalyst and molybdenum as promotor.
6. Manufactured of sulphuric acid by contact process is carried out using
platinum as catalyst.
7. In ostwald's process for manufacture of nitric acid using pt gauze.
8. Maltose and diastase are used as catalyst manufacture of ethyl alcohol by
fermentation of starch.
