Catalytic Promotor
Substance which themselves are not catalyst , but when mixed in small qualities with the catalyst increase
there efficiency are called as promoters.
promoter, in chemistry, substance added to a solid catalyst to improve its performance in a chemical reaction.
By itself the promoter has little or no catalytic effect. Some promoters interact with active components of
catalysts and thereby alter their chemical effect on the catalyzed substance. The interaction may cause
changes in the electronic or crystal structures of the active solid component.
Commonly used promoters are metallic ions incorporated into metals and metallic oxide catalysts, reducing
and oxidizing gases or liquids, and acids and bases added during the reaction or to the catalysts before being
used.
EXAMPLE OF PROMOTER
i)in Haber's process for the synthesis of ammonia, traces of molybdenum increases the activity of finely
divided iron which acts as a catalyst.
(ii) In the manufacture of methyl alcohol from water gas ,chromic oxide is used as a promoter with the
catalyst zinc oxide .
Catalytic Inhabiter
A catalyst inhibitor is a substance that decreases the rate of, or prevents, a chemical reaction, i.e. it opposes
the effect of a catalyst.
Example: A monomer (e.g. acrylic ester is sold with little amount of inhibitor in order to prevent undesirable
polymerization.

Title of Microproject:
Catalysis
• Leadership qualities
2. Negative catalyst.
“The substance which retards the rate of chemical reaction, when added is called as
negative catalyst”.
3. Auto catalyst.- “When one of the products of a reaction itself acts as a catalyst
for that reaction, the phenomenon Is called as autocatalysis. The substance which
acts as a catalyst is called as auto catalyst.
Types Of Catalysis:
(A) Homogeneous Catalysis: In homogeneous catalysis reaction, catalyst and
reactants are in the same phase i.e. may be in solid, liquid or gaseous phase.
E.g. Manufacturing of (H2SO4)
By chamber process.
2SO2(g) + O2(g) …[NO](g)……> 2SO3(g) + 2[NO](g)
(B) Heterogeneous Catalysis: When reactants and catalysts are in different phase
then this reaction is called as heterogeneous catalysis.
Title of micro-project :
Study of catalysis
1.0 Rational:
Basic science provides logical methods for explaining various
complicated concepts and stepwise methods to explain the important topic,is
essential for technician to perform his/her duties in industries. Students are able to
understand the mechanism by which the reaction take place. The knowledge of
working a group.
