Reflection Paper
Ever since I was a child, I have always been catholic. I was baptized, I made my
communion, and I also made my confirmation. I was definitely more ‘religious’ when I was
younger. I went to church every Sunday, went to CCD once every week until I made my
confirmation. Once I reached highschool I kind of drifted away from the Lord because my social
and athletic life became so busy so I just did not have enough time to go to church and study
the bible like I used to. Since I’ve been at Seton Hill, I joined FCA which is a fellowship of
christian athletes which has helped me stay closer to the Lord. I still definitely struggle, but it’s
getting better. I also took a faith religion and society class which helped me get a better
understanding of things but I personally know that there is always more to learn.
When it comes to the Bible, I would say I have a small understanding of it. I do not know
it word for word, but I know the popular verses and I also have some favorite verses that I like to
read. I have a Bible of my own and when I have time, I like to find a verse that matches my
feelings for the day and I journal into a little notebook that I have. We do something very similar
at FCA. We always pick a topic and find stories from the Bible that go along with it. I love doing
that because it really connects me with God and makes me think more about the stories we are
interpreting. I do not think just reading the bible helps, i feel like you really need to understand it.
Without understanding God's word, you really do not know what anything means that is said. I
only really read the Bible when something bad is happening in my life. I have changed that a
little bit but I never knew that the Bible just makes you happy in general. I can find a verse to fit
anything I’m going through and its a great thing.
For church history, I feel like coming into this class I did not know much about the actual
history. I more or less just knew what I was taught when I was younger. I never knew that the
church put itself together only 50 days after Jesus’ death. I knew that the church was in
Jerusalem but I guess it never occured to me that the first Christians were Jews that had
converted over.
To my understanding, Christianity is the study of Jesus of Nazareth in religion. Christians
believe in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Christians believe that Jesus is the Messiah.
From what I have heard about Protestantism, it is a type of Christianity. The original
Protestant was Martin Luther. I also know that this is the second largest form of christianity.
Role of protestantism, to my knowledge, is pretty big. Like I have said before, Protestantism is
the second largest form of Christianity. The Reformation founded Protestantism and this led to
Roman Catholicism and Protestant traditions splitting.
In this class, I am hoping to be more educated about other religions and just more
church history. I feel like growing up Catholic, that is all I know. I want to have a better
understanding of protestantism and how it plays a role in the Bible and church history in
general. I want to be able to understand other religions because I feel like there are so many
that I only have one perspective. I want to be more educated on it.
