LESSON

In argumentative writing, as in an editorial, authors choose their words

carefully in order to best convince the audience of his/her point of view. They try
to pick the most precise words to create the proper tone for their message. The
way they achieve this effect is to write with words that have attached to them
certain denotations and connotations.

Denotation - dictionary, literal meaning of words.

Connotation – common associations that people make with words
(positive or negative)

Look at the pictures below and study the following sentences:

1. Apples are used in making wine or cider vinegar.

2. I like to have the latest apple cellphone.
3. An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

Apple Drugs

7
When we say “Apple” it is a round fruit of a tree of the rose family, which
typically has thin red or green skin and crisp flesh. Many kinds have been
developed for making wine or vinegar called cider – and that is the Denotative
meaning of which. But sometimes, hearing the word “Apple”, it means a brand
of a company of gadgets, cellphones and computers. Another example is the
famous line, an apple a day makes the doctors away- this meaning is what we
call the Connotation. An apple alone will not be enough to curb your visit to
doctor’s, but apple has plenty of nutrients. It has pectin and Vitamin C that aids
in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. But it doesn’t need to be taken literally that if
you have to take an apple a day, will guarantee of not seeing your doctor but it
helps and it means that you have to live a healthy lifestyle such as eating a
healthy snack like apple.

Let us have another example.

1. Vaccine for Covid19 is a drug that will help fight the attack of virus in our
immune system.
2. Pip is on drugs after a series of injection conducted on him before
undergoing major operation.

The first sentence gives us the dictionary meaning, or the denotative

meaning which is, a substance that is used to treat, cure, or prevent
illnesses/diseases. Nonetheless, it has another meaning or connotative meaning
which is reaching the cloud nine or paradise or unconscious of the reality (the
feeling of contentment and relaxation or experiencing mental health issues)
which is reflected in the second statement.

Thus, Connotation and Denotation are two strategies of describing the

meanings of a word. Connotation refers to the wide array of positive and
negative associations that most words naturally carry with them, and
Denotation on the other hand is the precise, literal definition of a word that can
be found in a dictionary.

In addition, Denotation is when you mean what you say literally. And
Connotation is when you mean something else and can be used negatively or
positively depending on how we use it in a sentence.
