Footnote to Youth

In the literary piece, footnote to youth, the main characters are dodong, his father
and mother, teang, and blas. On the introduction of the story, Dodong develop an
attitude of being straightforward and confident to marry at the age of 17 years old. He
convinced his father to marry Teang even though it is too early for them to settle down.
Years later, he starts to question his decisions in life and think about what will happen if
he did not rush his marriage. He acted that way because he felt independent and he let
his hormones lead his life already. When it is the time where his eldest son wants to get
married at the age of 18 years old, the memories of the past came back to him and
advises his son to not let his young love dictate the rest of his life, but Blas decided it
already and he have no choice but to let him do what he wanted. Next, his father and
mother acted as what a parent should do when their children wanted to get marry at the
young age. His father was too stunned to speak when Dodong told him he wanted to
get marry because the father knows how hard it is to have a family at his age. At the
end of the day, they still let Dodong do what he wanted and let the love triumph. Third is
Teang, also a victim of early marriage, but her love for Dodong never fade away. Inspite
of her doubts, tiredness, and now ugly body, she didn’t regret marrying to Dodong and
still commited to her family. Lastly, Blas, the eldest son of Dodong and Teang who
already wanted to get marry at the age of 18 years old. He was advised by his father to
think hard and weight the pros and cons of entering in an early marriage but he was
confident that he would not repeat the same mistakes of his parents.

The main events of the story is the part where Dodong told his father that he
wanted to get married at a very young age, the part where he is re-thinking the
decisions he made in life, and the part where Blas convinces him that he also wanted to
get marry even he is still 18 years old. These parts carried the whole story and it
develop a very Filipino attitude. Most Filipino people are like Dodong and Blas who is
very rush of making decision and tend to be very emotional. These events showed that
marriage and the responsibilities under it is no joke. It should be taken seriously so that
there is no regrets at the end of the day. Building and leading a family is one of the
hardest challenge we can experience in our lives. Once you entered this, there is no
going back so we must be wise and smart.

The ideas of the story revolves around the family, love, responsibilities, and
youth. In the story, the family has the big role because Dodong ask for his father and
mother’s approval of his marriage. Blas is also like that to Dodong. It is like the tradition
of the Filipinos. The love in the story is the main reason why people like Dodong and
Blas wanted to tie the knot at the early age. Love has no boundaries and should not be
stopped, yes, but we people should also think about their responsibilities. The
responsibilities of the character in the story was not thought about carefully because
they made a rush decision. Lastly is the youth, the time where people are full of
excitement and are captivated by such desires. Like Dodong, Teang, and Blas, they all
got married on their youthful age. The immaturity is very visible to them because they
regret their sudden decision when the fun had gone. It was like a temporary happiness
but now, they can’t escape from it and had to deal with their mistake.
